What you should know about college financial aid | Medill ...
by Mara Grbenick, Medill News Service for Marketwatch on 05/29/12
WASHINGTON?President Barack Obama opposes a push by Congress to double the 3.4 % interest rate on federal Stafford student loans, but Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of Fastweb.com and Finaid.org, has a different message: Let the? rate expire in July as currently mandated and increase funding for Pell Grants, which help make college attainable for the neediest students in America.
The U.S. is in a brains race, Kantrowitz says, and, to stay competitive, should devote substantially more resources to smart people? who can?t afford college.
In a recent conversation, Kantrowitz offered his take on federal education loan policy and his best advice for students and parents.
What frustrates you most about how the college aid process works?
The financial aid system, which includes the financial aid application, the methods for evaluating financial need and the types of aid available, is too complicated. Neither the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) nor the College Board?s CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE Form take into consideration consumer debt held by the student or parents. Student loan debt is also not treated as offsetting to assets or income and consequently the need analysis overstates ability to pay. ?
There are three college savings plans: 529 College Savings Plans, Prepaid Tuition Plans and Coverdell Education Savings Accounts. There are three education tax benefits: Hope Scholarship Tax Credit (also known as the American Opportunity Tax Credit), Lifetime Learning Tax Credit and Tuition and Fees Deduction.? And there are also too many student aid programs: For example, there are five different federal loan programs ? Perkins, Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford, Parent Plus, consolidation loans ? and they all have different interest rates. It?s too much choice for most people and makes the true cost of college hard to know.
What should students really look for in their college aid award letters?
In financial aid award letters, colleges often describe loans as reducing college costs, which is, of course, misleading, because loans do just the opposite?they increase your costs. Also, there?s an important distinction between the net cost, the term used in award letters, and the true cost of college. The net cost of college is the total cost of attendance minus the financial aid package, which may include a variety of student loans.
I routinely hear from students who believe they are getting a free ride because the net cost is zero. The net cost is usually the same or similar to the expected family contribution, which may be zero for low-income students. When I look at their financial aid award letters I see thousands of dollars of student loans and tens of thousands of dollars of Parent PLUS loans. That isn?t a free ride.
What should the goals be on a national level to improve financial aid policy?
In the United States we are not adequately investing in our greatest resource?students. Public policy can be based on a variety of goals, such as increasing the number of college-capable low-income students who can enroll in and graduate from college or keeping the U.S. strong in fields that are going to be strategically important (e.g., science, technology, engineering and math) by rewarding academic merit in those fields. Finally, encouraging college graduates to become teachers in those areas will help educate the next generation so public service loan forgiveness should be a part of the policy.
More money for loans means less money for grants. Cutting direct investment in education will ultimately hurt us as a nation. The benefits of this investment are not private. Not only do college graduates earn incomes that are 70 to 80 % higher than high school graduates, but bachelor?s degree recipients also pay more than double the federal income tax.
Why have the interest rates on some federal student loans remained high even though interest rates for other things like cars are quite low? The Direct PLUS loan for Parents is 7.9 % plus a 4 % origination fee. The government makes money on it.
The rates are overall a pretty good deal. When you buy a car, the loan is secured with the car. When you buy a house, the mortgage is secured by the home. If you default on a federal student loan, the government cannot repossess your education. Federal student loans are also higher risk, since they are not credit underwritten. Federal student loans have fixed rates, while most other forms of consumer debt have variable rates, rates that have nowhere to go but up. This is why if you fail to pay your student loans, your wages or even Social Security checks could be garnished up to 15 %.
The interest rate doesn?t matter while you?re in school. It only affects the cost of college after you graduate. Remember that interest rates are unusually low right now because the Federal Reserve is suppressing increases in interest rates through 2014. If interest rates follow past patterns, they will eventually begin to rise by about the same amount they dropped at the start of the credit crisis. Federal student loans have fixed rates, which over time will cost less.
It?s an election year so there?s more talk about education policies that appeal to voters in the short-term, but what do you think the U.S. needs to do in the long-term?
We are no longer in an arms race, but in a brains race. We need a national priority of investing in people. The U.S. doesn?t have a monopoly on talent. We?ve invested in our native ingenuity [in the past], but we can?t slack off. The U.S. has the best system, but it?s only a matter of time before other countries start catching up. ?
Student aid policy over the past several decades has focused mainly on maintaining the status quo. While the total dollar amount of funding has increased, the average amount of funding per student has declined on a constant dollar basis. There has not been any bold new investment in postsecondary education. What would happen if we were to increase investment in the Pell Grant program from $30 billion a year to $100 billion? This would dramatically increase the number of college graduates, switching us from a downward spiral to a new renaissance of business and technological leadership. Even people who don?t have kids going to college would benefit because higher federal income tax revenue from the college graduates would allow Congress to maintain or expand current programs without any tax increases. There are 3 million jobs unfilled because we don?t have enough college graduates with the right skills to fill them.
What?s your best advice to students and parents who are trying to make a good decision for college?
?
- Start saving as soon as possible for college. The earlier you start, the better off you?ll be and the more flexibility you?ll have in making your decision. The greatest asset is time. If you start saving from birth, about a third of the college savings goal will be achieved from earnings rather than from contributions to savings. If you start saving when the child enters high school, only about 10% will come from earnings. Also start searching for scholarships early. Every dollar you save or win is about a dollar less you?ll have to borrow to pay for school. The more you can save or receive in grants, the more freedom you have to choose your ideal school.
- Minimize your debt. Before you incur debt, figure out how you will repay it. The total student loan debt you will take on should be less than your expected annual starting salary. Federal loans provide alternate repayment plans like extended repayment and income-based repayment, but those have consequences like more interest. The longer you are in debt, the more difficulty you will face in meeting other financial goals.
- Compare college costs based on net price. This is the truer measure of cost and affordability. The net price is the cost of attendance minus just grants and scholarships. The remaining amount is how much money you need to pay from savings, income or loans.
- Also consider graduation rates and other measures of college quality. Is your chosen field of study offered at the university and how strong is the program? Those students that are driven to do well will do well no matter where they go, but talented and driven students tend to matriculate in schools where the graduation rate is high. (It is unclear whether this is due to the value added by the elite colleges or whether the elite colleges merely aggregate the most talented students.) Given the tradeoffs between college affordability and college quality, it is often worthwhile to enroll at a lower-cost college, such as an in-state public college.
- Know how much debt you are really going to end up with and calculate the monthly loan payment. There are online tools for this. Think about the life goals you have and how those payments will affect your ability to meet those goals. Will you need a car? Do you want to save for a house or your children?s education? When evaluating college costs, make the cost of your loans tangible and specific.

Limitations Period for Personal Injury Claims - Stephen Stewart ...
Sadly, many accident victims and their families call us seeking help for themselves or a loved one, only to learn that the time limit to do anything from a legal standpoint has passed?leaving them with no help or assistance.??? A Statute of Limitations is a law which places a strict time limit on being able to initiate civil legal action.? When a statute of limitations has expired, it is no longer possible to bring a legal action against someone for injury, harm, or damages that have been suffered.? Each state has its own statute of limitations for filing lawsuits.? These statutes limit the right of an injured party to file a lawsuit unless it is done within a specified time period.? Statute of limitation laws are put in place in order to prevent fraudulent and stale claims from arising after evidence has been lost or after facts have become obscure through the passage of time, defective memories, and death or disappearance of witnesses.
Personal injury, wrongful death, and defective product claims are generally governed by a two (2) year statute of limitation.? There are some very narrow exceptions that may apply to limitations periods.? In order to assure that evidence is properly preserved, witness statements are taken, and complete investigations of claims can be timely completed, most accident victims will benefit from seeking good legal counsel early in the process.? Odds lengthen on Osborne's debt reduction gamble
LONDON (Reuters) - In George Osborne's office, a framed cartoon shows Britain's Chancellor being crushed by an elephant labelled debt.
The irony may be choking for Osborne: his bet on Britain growing out of its debt addiction is in doubt and the $2.5 trillion (1.59 trillion pounds) economy is bracing for what Prime Minister David Cameron has warned could be the breakup of the euro zone.
On inheriting Britain's biggest peacetime deficit, Osborne gambled he could charm bond investors by slashing spending, but that growth rates of between 2.0 and 3.0 percent would kick in from 2013 to lift the mood of voters ahead of the 2015 election.
Britain has however slipped back into recession, making the task of reducing borrowing much harder, while spending cuts have upset millions of voters.
"I thought, you know what, I am convinced that George Osborne is cutting as deep as he can now so that when we come to 2014 and it has worked, he can do the budget and say ... 'Here is a thank-you budget for four years of austerity'," Mark Garnier, who sits on parliament's Treasury Select Committee and is like Osborne a member of the Conservative Party, said.
"I am now convinced that won't happen," Garnier, who said external factors such as the euro crisis and high oil prices were to blame, told Reuters. "It's the worst possible outcome."
Cameron, who staked the reputation of the Conservative-led coalition government on reducing Britain's debts, is now under pressure to close Osborne's bet and reinflate.
Even the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has told Britain and the Bank of England to do more to stimulate demand, though bond investors say reducing the deficit remains essential to preserving government credibility.
"Those that argue for a lot of government spending underestimate the need to be able to (sell) ... your bonds to bond markets," said Jamie Stuttard, fixed-income portfolio manager at Fidelity, which manages $231.6 billion in assets.
"In this government bond market that is bifurcating into ... the haves and have-nots, the UK is still in the haves. But it is important for policy makers to continue to retain credibility in terms of keeping inflation low and a conservative approach on the fiscal side," Stuttard said.
"NO MONEY LEFT"
Since the coalition came to power, the bond market has been distorted by the Bank of England's 325 billion pound bond purchase facility, pushing down the yield on the benchmark 10-year gilt to a record low of 1.74 percent.
But Britain's Maastricht treaty deficit - the standard EU measure of borrowing - is forecast by the European Commission to reach 6.5 percent of GDP in 2013, higher than any other EU state bar Greece with 8.4 percent and Ireland at 7.5 percent.
Osborne was just 38 when he took the job in 2010, becoming the youngest Chancellor of the Exchequer since the appointment in 1886 of Winston Churchill's father Randolph.
But when he arrived at the offices of the Treasury, his deputy had been left a note by departing Labour treasury chief secretary Liam Byrne saying: "I'm afraid there's no money left".
Osborne faced a budget deficit of 11 percent and the UK gilt market was, in the words of Pimco's Bill Gross, the manager of the world's biggest bond fund, "resting on a bed of nitroglycerine" because debt was far too high.
Initially dismissed by some - including Bank of England Governor Mervyn King - as too wet behind the ears to cope with the situation, Osborne went for the jugular and silenced many doubters with an ambitious emergency budget.
He proposed cutting budgets across Whitehall by a fifth, eliminating the "structural" current deficit by fiscal year 2014-2015 and forecast public sector net debt would fall from a peak of 70.3 percent of GDP in 2013-2014.
Osborne said Britain had no choice: if it did not cut spending, it could lose its prized AAA credit rating.
Investors seemed pleased by his audacity; here was a politician who seemed to speak their language. "He's a risk taker, but in a positive way," said one source who works closely with Osborne but who spoke on condition of anonymity.
"He realises that without taking some calculated risks, the chance that you'll achieve your goals is a lot less."
SUBMARINE ATTACK
Another adviser to Osborne describes his decision to put Britain in the vanguard of the Western world's deficit reducers as one of political courage, though enemies say his choice would be more akin to political suicide if growth proves elusive.
Aides to the Conservative leadership were sanguine in 2010, admitting in private that it all hinged on the economy recovering. Asked at a reception shortly after the emergency budget what would happen if the economy tanked instead of flourishing, one admitted it would be catastrophic.
The lack of growth so far has torpedoed the government's debt projections, while voter anger at spending cuts has raised concerns in the Conservative party that Osborne's bet may lose it the next election.
If the economy remains stagnant but nominal debt projections remain accurate, public sector net debt could soar to over 90 percent of GDP in 2016/17, instead of the 74 percent forecast.
Public sector borrowing, forecast two years ago by Osborne to fall to 37 billion pounds ($59.5 billion) in 2015, is now forecast to be around double that at 75 billion, roughly the original estimate of the previous Labour government.
Only Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal and Hungary in the EU will spend more than Britain on interest payments in 2013 as a percentage of GDP, according to European Commission forecasts.
Nicknamed "the submarine" for his habit of working quietly in the background and surfacing only for major strategic interjections, Britain's economic woes have dragged Osborne into the harsh glare of a deeply critical local media.
Rupert Murdoch's Sun newspaper has ridiculed Cameron and Osborne as "dipsticks" and mocked their privileged backgrounds.
Osborne's 5 pence in the pound income tax cut for the wealthy cemented the image of a government out of touch with millions of voters struggling to cope with recession. One disgruntled Conservative lawmaker even branded them as "arrogant posh boys" who "don't know the price of milk".
Osborne went to one of Britain's top fee-paying schools and then to Oxford University. His father, Sir Peter, earned a fortune from the Osborne & Little wallpaper firm he co-founded.
Though Osborne is feted by allies as one of the most courageous and ruthless men in British politics, the charge that a risk-taking millionaire was gambling with the economic future of 62 million people has stuck.
"The voters were promised that all the pain ... would be worth it to get the deficit down," the opposition Labour Party's shadow chancellor, Ed Balls, said in an article this month.
"The government won't now meet its key pledge to balance the books by 2015 and is set to borrow an extra 150 billion pounds."
DIFFICULT DECISIONS
A recent poll showed the Conservatives losing their image of economic competence and local elections showed many Conservative voters staying at home rather than vote for the government.
"This is always going to be the time when the difficult decisions were coming to fruition. So I would describe him as resolute," Osborne's former adviser turned Conservative lawmaker Matt Hancock told Reuters.
"As chancellor what you've got to do is make the big calls. And you're judged not by tomorrow's headlines, but where it leaves you in coming years," Hancock said.
Conservative governments have come back from the brink before, for example Margaret Thatcher's election victory in 1983 after the 1980-81 recession. And if Osborne does catch growth in his sails, he could claim credit for a possible victory.
But with no growth, an election in just three years and his flagship five-year austerity plan already extended by two years, Osborne has little room for manoeuvre.
He declined to be interviewed. A spokesman for the Treasury said: "There is a false distinction between having a credible deficit reduction plan and having a plan for growth: the first is a vital part of the second.
"But despite our progress, Britain still has one of the highest budget deficits in the world, which is why it's right that we continue to deliver on that fiscal consolidation plan."
But in what amounted to proposing a "Plan B" alternative to Osborne's bet, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde told him this week that growth was too slow and Britain should bolster demand before low growth became entrenched.
For that to work, Osborne would have to hope he can charm both the bond market and British voters.

Is Internet Marketing or Network Marketing A Better Way To Make ...
?
I make money doing both Internet marketing and network marketing. The question for a newbie trying to make money online is which way is better? Let?s answer that question.
1. Network marketing. I have found that it?s easier to build an MLM business when you incorporate Internet marketing into it.
The big advantage is in generating real prospects for your business. In the old days of network marketing you had to prospect in person or by phone.
This eliminated most people from ever really sponsoring anyone and building a large downline. Most people were never any good at handing out business cards, prospecting, identifying real prospects, setting an appointment, doing an MLM business presentation, following up, enrolling a new distributor, and teaching them how to do what you just did.
It?s actually amazing to think about people like Mark Yarnell with Nu Skin, Dexter Jaeger with Amway, Jan Rhue with Discovery Toys, and so on were as successful as they were. This is why John Milton Folgg wrote the best-selling MLM book titled ?The Greatest Networker? which is a parable about a young man ready to quit network marketing and what he learns to become successful at it.
In the past so much energy was spent on personal development because this was really the only way the average person was going to improve themselves to the point they would go through this whole process to build their business.
2. Internet marketing. Even with the advantages that the Internet provides most people still will never sponsor more than 1 or 2 people in their downline. The reason for this is using the Internet to build an MLM business takes online marketing skills.
It really doesn?t matter what the business model is. Until you learn how to get traffic to a website you are not going to make money.
Based on this fact network marketing companies are incorporating a lot of training on traffic generation. This can still mean using offline marketing methods with your warm market.
However, in building a meaningful MLM business, you will need to learn how to promote your system of prospecting, sponsoring, and training using the Internet. The exciting thing about this is once you learn how to do it you can be in multiple network marketing businesses at the same time.
You may not be comfortable with that. You might just want to focus on one and building it as large as you can.
However, once you start making money with your first network marketing business, today many Internet marketers will take on a second mlm opportunity. The key to making this work for you is to outsource the traffic generation.
You can still put your personal touch on following up with prospects yourself. But you don?t have to deal with anybody until they are a legitimate prospect. This is why network marketing is a great way to make money when you use Internet marketing to assist you in doing it.

Cancer treatment discovery opens tumours to immune cells
(Medical Xpress) -- Scientists at the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR) have made exciting progress in their quest to help patients fight cancer using the body's own immune system. The Perth-based team - led by internationally renowned cancer researcher Professor Ruth Ganss - has published a paper on their discoveries in the US scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
"Until now, immunotherapy has not been very successful in treating cancer because tumours are very resistant to immune cells," said Dr Anna Johansson, from The University of Western Australia, which is affiliated with WAIMR.
"As a cancerous tumour grows, it forms a solid ball which is difficult for immune cells to get into and even if they can penetrate the tumour, the environment inside it either kills the cells or makes it difficult for them to function.
"We engineered a protein called TNF-Alpha so that it went straight to a pancreatic tumour and stayed there without toxic side effects outside the tumour.
"TNF-Alpha affected the blood vessels in the tumour in a surprising way which opened the solid ball so that immune cells could get inside.
"We thought it might damage the blood vessels because TNF-Alpha can be very toxic, but in low doses it actually improved them and increased healthy blood flow, helping immune cells to get inside the cancer."
TNF-Alpha has been shown to enhance the tumour's response to chemotherapy but until now scientists did not understand why. This study provides insights on how low-dose TNF-Alpha works in tumour and also shows for the first time that it can be combined with immunotherapy.

Ed McLaughlin remembered for cycling, community devotion
Ed McLaughlin addresses cyclists at the Tour de Ed in downtown Chico in 2011. The charity ride raises money for injured cyclists.
CHICO ? Few formal programs have been as successful as creating decision-makers for Chico than Ed McLaughlin, who died this morning.McLaughlin was widely known as "the bike guy," executive director of Chico Velo bike organization, and cycling advocate until he was involved in a cycling accident that left him paralyzed.
As friends and acquaintances talked about McLaughlin on today, his ability to advocate for cycling, advocate for Chico and convince individuals they could do the most good in elected office surfaced strongly.
At least four current and former city officials said they sought office because of encouragement from McLaughlin.
"He's responsible for me being mayor," said Ann Schwab Thursday morning.
An avid cyclist and co-owner of a downtown Chico bike shop, Schwab was a good friend of McLaughlin's, saying he had encouraged her to run for City Council.
Schwab said she saw McLaughlin on Tuesday, visiting him in the hospital after he fell out of bed last week. She did not know the cause of his death.
A family email forwarded to the Enterprise-Record said he had come home from the hospital on Wednesday and died early this morning. He was having breathing difficulties.
"These last six months he was the most active he had been since the accident. He was getting around town, and becoming very active with emails," Schwab said.
A freak accident in 2007 left McLaughlin paralyzed. He was riding with a group of other cyclists through
Bidwell Park and smashed into a bollard that was obscured by the group, which pressed together to avoid a pedestrian. The fork of his cycle broke and he fell to the front, injuring his spine.
He spent months in a Bay Area hospital renown for its back care before returning to Chico. In a wheelchair, he continued his advocacy for cycling, including serving as chair of the city's Bicycle Advisory Committee, which started in the mid-90s.
"He was the only chair," said Schwab. "He always said the best way to make change is to advocate."
Bike shop owner Steve O'Bryan of Pullins Cyclery said his civic involvement, first in the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission, was prompted by McLaughlin. He also served on the Chico Planning Commission, the Chico Unified School District board and is vice chair of the Bicycle Advisory Committee, which meets as needed.
O'Bryan remembers a post-election conversation about how many chamber-supported candidates won office, when a high Chico official commented on the more wide-spread success of Chico Velo-supported candidates.
"What Ed did was low key, steady and gradually influencing the powers that be, while seeking the funding that got projects done," O'Bryan said, noting McLaughlin refused to ask for city funding when other organizations did.
O'Bryan said most of the bike facilities around town bear McLaughlin's mark.
"Every time you take a bike ride, push a button at a stop or be on a separated bike path, or one with a stripe on the ground, the Mangrove Avenue bike tunnel ... know that Ed was heavily involved in that.
"He was the keystone."
McLaughlin was an ambassador for Chico as well, especially among the national cycling arena. He was involved in calling Bicycle magazine's attention to Chico, which in 1998 named it the best cycling community in the U.S. Other cycling organizations and publications also acknowledged Chico because of McLaughlin's efforts.
"It was Ed who first got me involved in governance," said Chico State University engineering professor Russ Mills, "first with the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission and then with the Chico State academic senate.
"He wasn't just an advocate for bicyclists, he was an advocate for life. Even after his tragic injury, Ed was still enthusiastic and connected."
After the accident, friends of McLaughlin created Tour de Ed bike ride as a fundraiser for helping him with care costs, but it was broadened to help any injured cyclist through the nonprofit Chico Cyclists Care Fund created after the first ride.
Friends also remember his wry sense of humor, borne out in costumes he would wear to the Tour de Ed bike event, including an ape, pope and cowboy outfits.
"I don't know what the significance of those costumes were," said Schwab, "but that was Ed."
From New Jersey, he also had a "New Jersey kind of attitude," O'Bryan said.
Before the accident, McLaughlin had been the executive director of Chico Velo cycling advocacy organization, weighing in on community plans and developments with an eye to the cycling community. He often volunteered for community planning processes, speaking for the cycling community.
He operated a bicycle delivery service and boasted that he didn't own a car.
"He had vision to see things," said O'Bryan, who said he met McLaughlin soon after he moved to Chico from Eureka. He worked at the Social Security office and would come into Chico Bicycle, where O'Bryan worked.
"He was overweight and smoked. Someone told him he'd better change his lifestyle so he got into bicycling."
McLaughlin was involved in expanding the Wildflower Century bike ride, O'Bryan said, which was also noted as one of the country's best 100-mile ride. This year, the ride, which occurred in April, had to be limited to 4,000 riders, who came from throughout the country.
In 2004, the League of American Bicyclists named Chico one of six bicycle-friendly communities, and McLaughlin was working on increasing Chico's status with that organization.
He was also an ardent letter writer to the Enterprise-Record, pointing out community issues on cycling, access and other matters that he felt needed to be addressed.
"What I appreciated most was his outlook on life, and his phrases, like he'd say you should examine your career, or what you were doing on a daily basis, then ask 'Are you in a rut or in a groove'," Schwab said.
"Hopefully he's on a good bike ride right now," said O'Bryan.
"Don't be sad for Ed; be sad for us."

The ?Christian Love? of the Providence Road Baptist Church
A lot of buzz has happened over the last few days regarding a sermon given by Pastor Charles Worley of the Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, NC. If you read the HuffPo or any number of other sources, you?re aware of it; Worley basically proposed a couple of large concentration camps. One for gay men, the other for lesbian women. The horrifying suggestions have caused a great deal of outcry over such a hateful tome, delivered from a pulpit.
Yes, the world, in general, is outraged. But Pastor Worley?s parishioners aren?t. They seem to agree with preacher man that putting people who are doing nothing but trying to live their lives into concentration camps is a pretty swell idea.
?
Members of Providence Road Baptist Church are standing behind Pastor Charles Worley and the sermon he delivered earlier this month calling for the elimination of the gay population.
Geneva Sims said she?s been listening to Worley preach the Gospel since the 1970s.? She wasn?t surprised by the 71-year-old pastor?s now infamous sermon.? In fact, she supports him and his message.
?He had every right to say what he said about putting them in a pen and giving them food,? said Sims.? ?The Bible says they are worthy of death. He is preaching God?s word.??
Providence Road Baptist Church member Stacey Pritchard agreed.
?Sometimes you?ve got to be scared straight,? she explained.? ?He is trying to save those people from Hell.??
Pritchard said Worley?s message isn?t one of hate.? Instead, she interpreted it as tough love guided by Good Book.
His words are viewed as hurtful and offensive to many people around the world.? The May 13 sermon video, originally posted on the church?s website (it has since been taken down), shows Worthy speaking out against gay marriage and President Barack Obama?s support of it.? Most of the backlash, though, is focused on a portion of the sermon where he details a way to ?get rid of? the gay population.
?I figured a way out ? a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers ? but I couldn?t get it past the Congress,? he said.? ?Build a great big, large fence?50 or 100 miles long?put all the lesbians in there. Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals and have that fence electrified so they can?t get out. Feed them. And you know in a few years, they?ll die out. You know why? They can?t reproduce.?
Worley went on to say homosexuality makes him ?puking sick.?? According to Brent Childers of the non-profit organization Faith in America, statements like that are detrimental to young people in America.
?That is what makes young LGBTs feel there is no hope,? said Childers, who also believes religious leaders like Worley hurt the public?s perception of the Christian faith.
?When they see this type of rhetoric coming from a so-called Christian pastor, they aren?t going to want anything to do with the church?now or in the future,? said Childers.? ?If you defend this pastor?s comments, you are mocking God?s love, God?s understanding and God?s knowledge.?
?
And while you?re at it, you?re going to have to stick me in that concentration camp, too.
No, I?m not gay. But I?ve done some pretty bad things, according to the Bible
?
You shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor shall you wear a garment of cloth made of two kinds of material. ~Leviticus 19:19
?
I sit here now, in my cotton-polyester shirt, thinking about my garden, where you will find corn, tomatoes, beans, and peas. And soon, some watermelons. Got flower gardens around the other side of the yard. A MIX of perennial and annual plants.
What do you want to bet that Stacey and Geneva are also guilty of at least some of the things I?ve done? See you in the camp, vile sinners.
Brent Childers is completely right about this, of course. Younger people, especially, will hear these messages of hate, and turn completely away from religion. I hear these messages of hate, and refuse to allow my own daughters anywhere near a Sunday service. When they get older, they are free to do as they choose to do, but dragging them into a church right now could very well be child abuse, if the preacher is spewing the kind of hate that Pastor Worley spews.
When we look at religion overall, the most hateful religions all seem to be Abrahamic. There?s always a way to justify killing someone, if you open up one of the Abrahamic good books and look long enough. The number of atrocities committed by people who used their holy books as their inspiration is endless, from the Crusaders, to the Inquisitors, to Hitler, to Osama, to Kony?. and only Dog knows how many indigenous people in North America were wiped out by good Christians, doing the work of the Lord. It is saddening, it is disgusting, and it is incredible, to me at least, that humanity can?t advance itself enough to get past the urge to kill people based on their living, or thinking, in a way that others deem to be ?an abomination.?
I have said that I think the tax exemption for churches should be lifted, especially if those churches use donations to spew hate. But I?ve had my mind opened up by a suggestion I heard recently. Someone said that maybe, instead of taking the tax-exempt ststus away from churches, what we should do is take away the tax DEDUCTION for church donations. That way, he said, at least the taxpayers wouldn?t be subsidizing hate anymore.
I kind of dig that idea. Let Geneva and Stacey pay for the hate out of their own pockets.
