Penn State has been in the news a lot recently due to the Jerry Sandusky scandal. A number of high officials have been implicated, the NCAA has slapped Penn State with serious sanctions, and once-hero Joe Paterno's statue was removed recently after a plane flew over campus demanding it be taken down. Some say that no press is bad press, but is this really the case here?

The anger people feel is understandable. There was serious injustice taking place, the rape of innocence and violations of trust. When justice is subverted and crimes hidden, people naturally are outraged. Why didn't someone who knew about this situation do something to stop it? If the proper channels of communication and law were not blocked by people in positions of power, then this case would have been resolved long ago. Instead, it seems these people did not want the public relations nightmare that would ensue if this story reached the light of day. But it eventually did.

Now that the Sandusky Scandal reached its crescendo with the guilty verdict, the community is faced with a situation that is much worse than if people had done the right thing when they could have. This would have saved boys from torment, which is most important, but it would have also saved The Penn State University and surrounding State College community from a great deal of headache and heartache. It can be compared to ripping off a band-aid quickly. It will hurt a bit at first, but it's much better than the agonizing pain of peeling it off slowly. Instead of being in the process of healing, the pain continues.

This is not just about the football program, the college, the community, or the state of Pennsylvania. The lessons that can be learned here can be applied to our nation and our world at large. When action can be taken to rectify a terrible situation, it is best to act swiftly to do the right thing, even though it may seem dangerous or unpopular at first. Justice will eventually uncover the criminals, and so it is much better to be a part of the solution, rather than to help prolong the problem.

The wrongdoers are facing penalties for their actions, but because of all the negative media coverage, they have sullied the reputations of many innocent people associated with Penn State. Perhaps there will be some good that comes from this all, though it is hard to see now. As the football program licks its wounds, some of the other sports could take the spotlight. Maybe there will be an increased focus on academic excellence. And what if this scandal inspires more young people to seek social justice?

"For us, the match against India is like another game. We have played them a lot in the past and that pressure is not there anymore," insisted the all-rounder, who was given the reins of the national T20 side in May this year.

Pakistan go into today?s Super Eight fixture against nemesis India at the back of a close win against South Africa, and Hafeez said that his side was brimming with confidence after clinching the thrilling victory over the Proteas.

European cargo craft undocks from space station

MOSCOW (AP) ? The European Space Agency says its cargo craft has successfully undocked from the International Space Station after a failed separation caused by communication problems earlier in the week.

The ATV-3 detached from the Russian service module early Saturday and is expected to leave orbit and be jettisoned Tuesday into an unpopulated area of the South Pacific. The ATV-3 launched in March from a facility in the South American country of French Guiana with more than seven tons of food, water and other supplies for the space station.

It has been loaded with waste for disposal. Three astronauts are set to travel to the space station next month, bringing to six the number of crewmembers at the orbiting laboratory.

Beware Rogue Online Pharmacies, FDA Says

Shopping online is the way of the world these days, but not all e-commerce transactions are created equal. Buying a saut? pan on Amazon? Not a risky venture. Buying antibiotics from an online pharmacy that didn?t ask for a prescription? You?re asking for trouble.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning to people who buy their prescription dugs online: buyer beware. Many online pharmacies are fake, the agency says, selling medications that may make you sick.

?Buying medicines from rogue online pharmacies can be risky because they may sell fake, expired, contaminated, not approved by FDA, or otherwise unsafe products that are dangerous to patients,? FDA commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg, said in a news release. ?Fraudulent and illegal online pharmacies often offer deeply discounted products.?

Bottom line: if prices for prescription meds sound too good to be true, they probably are.

Almost 25 percent of people who shop on the Internet have bought prescription drugs online, the FDA says. And 30 percent of those people said they weren?t sure about how to safely purchase medication that way.

They?ll need to come up to speed quickly, since the National Association of Board of Pharmacy says that less than 3 percent of online pharmacies are in line with federal and state laws.

While the FDA didn?t say if online prescription drug shopping has increased, some other recent statistics may shed some light on the issue. A recent study in the journal ACS Chemical Neuroscience found that a record 4.02 billion prescriptions were written in 2011, up from 3.99 billion in 2010.

But Americans are having more trouble paying for those drugs. Consumer Reports said recently that a struggling economy is forcing more Americans to cut back on healthcare needs, including skimping on medications.

Along with the warning the FDA launched its BeSafeRx?Know Your Online Pharmacy campaign, which offers information on the dangers of buying medication from a fake online pharmacy, and how to tell a reputable business from a shady one.

Some tips: a legit pharmacy will ask for a valid medical prescription from a doctor or other healthcare professional, a licensed pharmacist will be available for questions, and it will be licensed by the state board of pharmacy.

Healthy Optimism Will Get You Far

If you want to fly unaided, using only your hands and arms, no amount of positive thinking will allow you to do that flying. As a matter of fact, of course, if you stand on the top corner of a high building and spread your arms and hands and expect to fly when you jump off that building you will kill yourself.

On the other hand, healthy optimism will get you farther down the road of life than pessimism. Health and wealth are just two of the possibilities that may come your way when you hold a consistently positive attitude.

Studies have shown that people who are consistently affirmative in their attitude toward everything and everybody enjoy better health than those who do not. A whole craze has grown up around casting positive vibrations upon the Universe, expecting positive return on thoughts and feelings from the Universe.

Neither Too Hot Nor Too Cold

Healthy optimism, in my opinion, is somewhere between fatalistic pessimism and irresponsible optimism, sometimes called Pollyanna-ism. Fatalistic pessimism might be defined as believing that everything, all the time, will turn out poorly or badly. Irresponsible optimism might be defined as the attitude that everything all the time will turn out well or good. That one can fly unaided would be irresponsible optimism; that one can never fly in any way might be fatalistic pessimism.

Healthy optimism has got to be somewhere in between.

You Can Fly

Of course, you can fly ? in a plane or a giant kite or in the newer para-suits where you look like a flying squirrel. The person who set out to learn to fly, by holding a positive attitude, kept working and inventing until human flight become possible. Enter the Wright brothers and their flying machine.

So positive thought long held will produce results. Those results can be, literally, in any walk of life, through any occupation or avocation. Your life can be improved through healthy optimism.

How Do I Get One?

Simply said, you develop a positive attitude by developing a positive attitude. Yes, I know the former sentence sounds redundant. But is it really redundant? If your attitude is negative at this time, you?ve got to turn things around by turning your mental posture in a different direction.

You?ve got to see the virtuous and benevolent in everything and everybody. Yes, I know that is not easy in every case. Sometimes it is downright difficult when it comes to some people or some disasters.

Your atrocious boss may try to browbeat you into submission with his impossible demands and deadlines. The tornado that destroyed your home and took all your possessions is not easy to see as presenting opportunities to find the good in it.

A Foundation Is Necessary

To develop and keep healthy optimism you need a foundation upon which to build. You need a place where you may position your confidence that things will turn out, if not for the best, than better than first might meet the eye.

You find such a foundation in the meaning of life, which, I believe, is to be happy. You find that happiness by developing a genuine relationship with The All There Is. You develop that relationship by being in constant touch with The All There Is through such activities as the many forms of meditation.

In that relationship you will find total and complete acceptance from The All There Is. In that absolute acceptance you will find happiness that weathers every and all conditions. There is no greater feeling of well-being than to be perfectly accepted just as you are right now. A supreme feeling of well-being is happiness. Said another way, happiness is a feeling of constant well-being.

Develop That Base

Use one of the forms of meditation and begin today to develop healthy optimism that your life be positive. You can turn your life around in this moment by deciding you will develop the foundation and the relationship that leads to the ability to maintain positivity.

Blasphemy is not a crime; blasphemy is a civic duty. It is the moral obligation of clear thinking, reasonable people to stand up and speak out against religious superstition and ignorance.

Recent events in the Middle East have ignited a new push towards an international law criminalizing blasphemy. The consideration of any such draconian legislation or regulation should be of deep concern to all those who cherish free-speech, rational thought and civilized society.

Blasphemy is defined as the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for a religious deity, or showing irreverence towards religious or holy persons or things. Yet how else is an honest and reasonable person to treat religious ignorance and superstition?

A lack of reverence for religious nonsense is a sane and healthy response to the irrational. Belief in supernatural nonsense deserves scorn and contempt. While individuals who have fallen victim to religious delusion deserve pity and empathy, the nonsense that is religious belief deserves no such concern.

Indeed, reasonable people must recognize that religious belief constitutes a clear and present danger to the human species. Currently it is dangerous in many parts of the world to express the simple fact that there is no convincing evidence for God, or to even draw a picture of a certain holy figure. Such a state of affairs is an affront to humanity, and should be at once both intolerable and repugnant to all good people.

Some will argue that not all religious superstition is the same, and that Islam is more dangerous than competing superstitions such as Judaism and Christianity. And while it may be true that at this particular point in history the extremes of Islam prove more offensive than competing superstitions, there is no doubt that given the right set of circumstances extremists of the Christian or Jewish faith would be equally abusive and draconian in their attempts to subjugate a population.

A great man once said ?Religion poisons everything.? There is no more pressing or profound truth given the current global situation. Blasphemy is a legitimate and potent force in the fight against religious ignorance and superstition. Religious nonsense must be exposed to the light of day if we are to eliminate the toxin that threatens all of us.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant; and if shining a light on religious ignorance and superstition is blasphemy, than blasphemy is a civic duty, and a moral obligation.

Full Metal Panic!: Nightmare's Beginning!

If you enjoyed the manga and/or the anime of Full Metal Panic! then you should get a kick out of this RP. If you're a fan of anime or manga that depicts Mech suits of any kind, this RP should still be right up your alley. Designed with the original story and concepts in mind of Full Metal Panic!, this RP takes place not long after the events of the anime's conclusion of the story from The Second Raid and continues the fight against Amalgam through the eyes of a new unit known as "Gaea Team".

What is Gaea Team, you ask?

Gaea Team is the newest addition to the SRT, or the Special Response Team within the organization of Mithril. After the success of the Uruz Team, a new unit was developed with the intention of increasing the scope and range of the SRT's combat capabilities worldwide. Uruz Team can only be in one location at once, so Gaea Team was brought in to help create a newer but just as efficient team to the SRT so that Uruz Team would not have to bear the burden of "first into battle" alone.

Using specialized Mech Suits known as Arm Slaves, Gaea Team, like Uruz Team before them, are now on a mission to the front lines of the conflict with Amalgam and other terrorist organizations worldwide so that the world can breath a sigh of relief from the chaos that these groups have wrought.

What are Arm Slaves?

Arm Slaves are mecha's which stand approximately 8-9 meters in height depending on the model and manufacturer (as well as the owner's spec preferences). These mecha's are strong, fast, durable, and dangerous. Consider them to be giant suits of armor because, as an Arm Slave pilot, you will be inside the machine and control its every move and attack. Fairly simple really.

What's the reason behind the Arm Slaves in this RP?

An excellent question!

Arm Slaves in this RP are basically there to ensure that you are going to kick ass in the RP's combat scenes. As well as having a character who can take care of themselves without the Mech, I'm basically giving you permission to god-mode during these combat scenes unless there happens to be a very special weapon amongst the enemy's ranks, and I guarantee you there will be. This device is known as the Lambda Driver, and it has the ability to turn the user's will into actual physical power.

This is a screen shot from the Second Raid where the main character, Sosuke Sagara and his Arm Slave ARX-7 Arbalest, are making use of the Lambda Driver to destroy an incoming round from a tank which would otherwise severely damage or destroy the Arbalest. Sosuke could not use this machine consciously, and it was activated by his instinct and need to protect himself. This instability is common to almost all Lambda Driver machines, but certain drugs and special training help one maintain control over the machine to the point where using it is second nature completely rather than just instinct.

Will I get to have a Lambda Driver in the RP?

While normally I would be inclined to say "yes", this content is not of my own creation and I am not going to change the original story concept just so everyone can have a Lambda Driver. This adds to the challenge of the RP. Since you don't have Lambda Drivers yourselves but will undoubtedly face them in combat, it makes the RP harder and more dangerous for you! Isn't that wonderful!?

Anyway...

Within the world of Full Metal Panic!, Amalgam is the only known organization with open access to the Lambda Driver though the reasons for why they have such access remains unknown. Amalgam has deployed it numerous times in combat against Mithril and other organizations who got in their way and it is clear that they do not fear the machine's power. Within the organization of Mithril Sosuke Sagara's ARX-7 Arbalest is the only known machine to carry the Lambda Driver and Sosuke is not a playable character within this RP.

However...

There is going to be a bit of good news for those who join and dream of operating an Arm Slave equipped with a Lambda Driver. Though you cannot start with a Lambda Driver, you might be able to have access to one in the later stages of the RP. My character, Blaze was once a member of Amalgam and his Arm Slave was loaded with a Lambda Driver unit. When he was captured by Mithril and defected to their side, the Lambda Driver was removed from his Arm Slave for study and possible mass production. Whether this holds true in the RP or not remains to be seen but there is hope! However, the number of Lambda Drivers is going to be limited and not everyone is going to get one.

Has anything from the original story of Full Metal Panic! changed at all?

No.

Despite the fact that Uruz Team will not be mentioned very often or interacted with at any time, this story puts all who join in the shoes of Mithril operatives within Gaea Team. Utilizing Arm Slave units and making extensive use of Amalgam and other terrorist organizations as opponents throughout the story, I have done all I can to ensure an enjoyable experience that stays as close to the original content as possible. There will be a few twists of course, but the main content of the story is all based on the original design.

What can I expect from this RP?

This RP is basically a story seen and told through the eyes of the members of Gaea Team. Being a unit within the Special Response Team of Mithril, you can expect to see a lot of combat both in and out of your Arm Slave Unit. Each Arm Slave is customizable by the respective owner so long as they stay true to the specs of the basic design and model such as an M9 Gernsback. There is going to be plenty of intrigue as well within this story, and plot twists will be common enough to keep you on your toes. This RP is going to be both interesting and challenging to fans and newcomers alike, though fans will enjoy it the most.

I don't know what Full Metal Panic! is, so can I still join and look forward to a good experience without prior knowledge to the original content?

Absolutely!

Whether you know what is involved in Full Metal Panic! is not what's important. What is important is that you read the information and descriptions carefully and adhere to the rules of the RP. So long as you do that, you are cleared to submit a character for the RP. It helps to have a basic understanding of combat, physics, and science. If you do decide to join and you don't know much about Full Metal Panic!, I would highly suggest visiting wikipedia to read up on "Black Technology" and "Whispereds" from the series as those two subjects will give you the best idea of what to expect.

'Today' producer angry about Lauer stories

NEW YORK (AP) ? The "Today" show's top producer on Wednesday defended Matt Lauer against stories that have portrayed the anchor as difficult to deal with during the show's slide in the ratings.

The longtime morning champ has slipped behind ABC's "Good Morning America" in the ratings over recent months, after more than 15 years of being the unquestioned leader in the morning. The new ratings order has solidified since Ann Curry's tearful exit as Lauer's co-host in June.

"Matt has been the heart and soul of the show for a long, long time, and any of the stuff out that has portrayed him in an unflattering light as being difficult to work with is patently false and it's been tough to deal with," said Jim Bell, "Today" executive producer.

One tabloid report last week described Lauer as an "anchor animal" who berates the staff and inserts himself into show decisions, which Bell described as "patently false." He also denied an online report that Lauer would be asked to take a pay cut if the show's ratings don't improve. "Today" has also consistently shot down stories that Lauer played a behind-the-scenes role in Savannah Guthrie's replacement of Curry.

Asked if viewers were taking Curry's dismissal out on "Today," Bell said that "it's more complex than that."

"Any time there is a change, especially in the morning, it takes a while for people to process that change and we're still going through that," Bell said. "That's OK. We understand. We get it. We love our team and we really feel positive about the show we are doing and we are taking the long view here."

"Today" has actually taken pride in seamless anchor transitions in the past, such as when Meredith Vieira replaced Katie Couric, Curry replaced Vieira and Lauer took over for Bryant Gumbel. This one hasn't worked, at least for now.

Bell denied reports that he would leave "Today" for another job at NBC, saying "this is the best job in the world."

After a 17-year winning streak in the ratings, "GMA" overtook "Today" during a couple of weeks last spring. With the exception of two weeks when "Today" broadcast from the London Olympics, the ABC show has won consistently since Curry's dismissal, by margins as much as 800,000 viewers.

"GMA" has succeeded with a lighter, more pop culture-oriented show. Its on-air team of George Stephanopoulos, Robin Roberts, Josh Elliott and Lara Spencer has clicked during NBC's turmoil. "Today" has long been a huge cash cow for NBC, and a permanent change in the morning's pecking order would have big financial implications.

"For a long time, they tried to do a version of the 'Today' show," Bell said of ABC. "It didn't work well, so they have tried to do a different show. We are different shows right now. Despite however that might be working in the short term, for our show, it's in our best interests to be who we are and not try to do what someone else is doing."

Asked for comment, ABC spokesman Jeffrey Schneider said: "I think the audience has spoken loud and clear about its preference in the morning."

He said "Today," which featured a Curry interview with Libyan President Mohammed Magarief on Wednesday, will be making its differences with "Good Morning America" more apparent in coming months.

"While we recognize in the short term we're going through a difficult period, we're not going to compound it by suddenly doing a different show from the one we all feel good about, which is a smart show, a relevant show and an important show to do," he said.

Family of missing UK teen appeal for contact

LONDON (AP) ? The parents of a missing British schoolgirl believed to have run away with her teacher have issued a plea for her to come home.

Authorities believe Megan Stammers, 15, is in France with 30-year-old Jeremy Forrest, a math teacher at the Bishop Bell C of E School in East Sussex.

Her mother, Danielle Wilson, issued an emotional appeal Monday in a televised press conference with police, begging her daughter to get in touch.

Police believe the teen left of her own accord but say they need to hear that she is safe, urging Forrest to make contact with authorities.

The alarm was raised Friday after Megan failed to turn up for school. Police believe she and Forrest took a ferry to France.

An appreciation picnic for recycle volunteer workers and family past and present will take place at Woodland Mead Park starting at 2:30 p.m with a miniature golf tournament. From 4:30 to 5 p.m. everyone will gather over at the Fairfield Bay Senior Center for fried chicken, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, rolls, drinks, and ice cream and cake.

After a belly full, we will have a very short information period. Ribbons will be awarded for outstanding and not so outstanding miniature golf adventures. You must be present for the door prize drawings, so be sure to get your door prize ticket at Woodland Mead Park or at the Senior Center.

Literacy Council Seeks Volunteers

Do you like to read? Just think of all the pleasure and information we get from reading newspapers, magazines, books, and online information, not to mention recipes, how-to instructions, and medical directions and prescriptions. Most of us take knowing how to read for granted. Just imagine how difficult life would be if you couldn?t read or read very well. Did you know there are approximately 2,000 adults in Van Buren County who don?t have the literacy skills to read this newspaper, a job application, or help their children with homework? Poor reading handicaps people in many different ways. Learning to read or to read better can make a huge difference in someone?s life as well as their income.

The Van Buren County Literacy Council?s mission is to give a helping hand to those over age 18 who have difficulty reading. Volunteers tutor adults one-on-one with a special adult reading system called The Laubach Way to Reading. The Laubach method is proven to work and has been used around the world for many years to teach adults to learn to read in their own native language. It can also be used to teach Spanish speaking people to read and write in English. The files of the Council are filled with success stories about people who have completed the program and gone on to get a better job, a GED, or simply to have an easier and more pleasurable life because now they can read.

Won?t you consider becoming a volunteer reading tutor? The Literacy Council is seeking new volunteers to help adults learn to read. You don?t have to be a teacher or have any special skills in order to be a tutor. You just have to have a willingness to help and 1 or 2 hours a week of time to give. The training is free, and the books, workbooks, and teaching materials are all provided for you, as well as a classroom. Tutoring is easy, fun, and very rewarding when you see your student making progress and enjoying reading.

Researchers identify possible key to slow progression toward AIDS

One of the big mysteries of AIDS is why some HIV-positive people take more than a decade to progress to full-blown AIDS, if they progress at all.

Although the average time between HIV infection and AIDS in the absence of antiretroviral treatment is about 10 years, some individuals succumb within two years, while so-called slow progressors can stay healthy for 20 years or longer.

Researchers already know that many slow progressors carry a gene called HLA-B*57 (B57), an immune gene variant that is found in less than 5 percent of the general population but in 40 to 85 percent of slow progressors. Yet even among those with the B57 gene, the speed of disease progression can vary considerably.

Now, a group of investigators from the Multi-Center AIDS Cohort Study (MACS), housed within the UCLA AIDS Institute, may have uncovered the key to this variation. It is a killer T-cell immune response that occurs early on in HIV infection and targets a section ? or epitope ? of the HIV protein called IW9.

The novel findings are featured on the cover of the October issue of the Journal of Virology.

"Since the hope for a vaccine is that it would elicit immune control, the thought has been that understanding how B57 protection works would yield helpful lessons and principles for vaccine design," said Catherine Brennan, an assistant research scientist in the department of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the study's lead author. "There have been a lot of efforts to understand how the immune response to HIV in B57 carriers is superior to the response in non-B57 carriers, but it has been hard to nail anything down conclusively."

HLA-B genes are known to work by activating killer T cells that recognize unique sections of proteins, or epitopes, but it has been a mystery which section or sections of HIV protein HLA-B57 and the killer T cells work through.

Previous research had largely focused on the killer T-cell response after several years of infection. However, Beth D. Jamieson, a professor of medicine at the Geffen School of Medicine and the study's principal investigator, believes that the most critical responses are likely to occur early during infection, when the T cells are still strong and can reduce the number of places where HIV hides out in the human body.

Researchers have studied the immune response in the early months of infection, but since it is not easy to predict at early stages which people will ultimately become slow progressors, correlating early immune responses with long-term outcomes has been difficult.

"What made this kind of study possible for us is the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study, which is an incredible longitudinal study," Brennan said.

The MACS has been freezing blood samples every six months since 1984 from thousands of men either at risk of HIV infection or already infected.

"The size and duration of the study, along with the careful documentation of participant health and stewardship of frozen samples, allowed us to recover blood samples taken shortly after HIV infection from 14 HLA-B57 carriers with known infection dates and known long-term outcomes," Brennan said. "This allowed us to correlate early immune responses with long-term outcomes."

It was important to the researchers to compare only the killer T-cell responses among those with the B57 gene variant, instead of comparing the responses of those with and without B57. Although B57 carriers have, on average, much better prognoses than non-carriers, there is tremendous variability among the population, and not all do well, Jamieson said.

"Since possession of the B57 variant is not sufficient, we wanted to determine what specific immune events in B57 carriers are associated with immune control of the virus," she said. "We found that those who targeted the IW9 epitope early in infection had significantly longer times until onset of AIDS than those who did not. The finding that targeting of IW9 seems to be important is novel, as this epitope had been overlooked in many earlier studies of B57 and HIV."

The researchers cautioned that the study was based on a small sample of only 14 individuals and that a wider pool of subjects is needed to replicate their findings. Also, their results point to a correlation with ? not causation of ? slower disease progression among B57 carriers who target the IW9 epitope soon after HIV infection.

"This work, although not powered by a large cohort and necessarily exploratory in nature, does suggest that the role of IW9 targeting in B57-mediated protection merits closer attention," the researchers conclude. "Understanding the detailed mechanisms by which B57 is associated with slow progression to disease will reveal underlying principles of immune control of HIV-1, which is critical for the development of rational vaccine-design strategies."

A step closer to harnessing fusion power

A crushed tube the size of a thread spool has brought the United States one step closer to harnessing nuclear fusion as a clean, almost limitless, power source.

The experiment at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico tested how well a tiny cylinder could withstand the crushing magnetic force from the lab's "Z machine" ? a pulsed-power accelerator that zapped the cylinder with 25 million amperes of electric current. The "liner" cylinder collapsed on itself, as would be expected, but remained intact enough to theoretically squeeze together deuterium or tritium fuel, triggering nuclear fusion.

"Our experiments were designed to test a sweet spot predicted by the simulations where a sufficiently robust liner could implode with a sufficiently high velocity," said Ryan McBride, a researcher at the laboratories in Albuquerque.

Such careful balance is needed to crush the beryllium cylinder in the right way to achieve sustainable fusion someday. A thicker cylinder would make the crushing implosion less efficient, and a thinner cylinder could rip apart under the stress.

The cylinder is designed to hold a BB-sized fuel capsule containing deuterium fuel. Seawater contains huge amounts of deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen, and half a bathtub of seawater could theoretically create the energy equivalent of 40 train cars of coal.

Both the cylinder and its tiny fuel capsule represent the possibility for achieving inertial confinement fusion ? the cylinder's implosion would compress the deuterium fuel and heat it to temperatures similar to those in the core of the sun. Such fusion processes power stars.

The Sandia test used a laser to preheat the metal cylinder before zapping it with electricity to create the crushing magnetic fields. Other inertial confinement fusion efforts would harness even more powerful lasers, such as the cluster of lasers at the National Ignition Facility that focus like a mini-Death Star on a target. Sandia researchers have used simulations to show that their Z machine could trigger "break-even" nuclear fusion that creates just a bit more energy than it takes in. But a more powerful machine could eventually lead to "high-gain" fusion using the new crushing technique, creating more than 1,000 times the energy put in, thereby making fusion power practical.

The next steps in the march toward fusion involve testing the laser preheating and secondary magnetic fields that would keep charged particles from escaping the hot fuel ? tests scheduled for December. Researchers hope to test the entire concept before the end of next year.

"We are now confident enough to take the next steps on the Z facility of integrating in the new magnetic field and laser preheat capabilities that will be required to test the full concept," said Dan Sinars, manager at Sandia National Laboratories.

Exxon buys Denbury's Bakken properties in $1.6-billion deal

(Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp will buy Denbury Resources Inc's properties in the Bakken shale for $1.6 billion and the exchange of some assets as the world's largest publicly traded energy company seeks to boost its crude oil output.

Exxon shares rose 22 cents to $90.79 in early trading Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange. Denbury shares climbed 3.3 percent to $17.27.

Exxon and other global oil companies like Royal Dutch Shell are buying more oil and gas assets in North America as they struggle to boost production in a sector where a vast amount of energy resources is located and tightly controlled by countries like Brazil and Russia.

The use of technologies like hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling have unlocked vast supplies of oil and gas. Output in the Bakken - which spans North Dakota, Montana and Canada - is expected to double to about 1.2 million barrels per day by 2015.

The properties being bought consist of about 196,000 net acres, with expected production of more than 15,000 oil equivalent barrels per day in the second half of this year, Exxon said.

The acquisition will increase Exxon's holdings in the Bakken region to nearly 600,000 acres, and similar purchases are expected in the future by other big oil companies.

"We expect more of these deals from the majors in the future, given the majors' collective struggles to grow production and replace reserves, their significant financial resources, and given the fact that they have come to believe that the United States' unconventional oil growth story is a durable one," analysts at Houston-based energy investment bank Simmons & Co, told clients.

As average drilling and completion costs - at about $8.5 million per well - are among the highest in Bakken, companies need deep pockets to wait until new pipelines and infrastructure come up in the next few years.

Denbury said it plans to use part of the proceeds to buy oil fields in the Gulf Coast or Rocky Mountain regions.

The company, which will receive Exxon's operating interests in the Webster field in Texas and the Hartzog Draw field in Wyoming, said the assets were close to its existing or planned projects for recovering oil using carbon dioxide.

"We can now focus on what Denbury does best, carbon-dioxide enhanced oil recovery, which we believe offers one of the most compelling rates of return in the oil and gas industry today," Denbury Chief Executive Phil Rykhoek said in a statement.

The deal is expected to close late in the fourth quarter.

Actress in anti-Muslim film sues for its removal

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An actress who appears in the anti-Muslim film trailer that has sparked riots in the Middle East is suing the filmmaker for fraud and slander, and is asking a judge to order YouTube to take down the clip.

Cindy Lee Garcia's lawsuit filed Wednesday in Los Angeles claims the actress was duped by Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, the man behind "Innocence of Muslims" who has been forced into hiding since its 14-minute trailer rose to prominence last week. She was unaware of the film's anti-Muslim content and the pages of the script she received had no mention of the prophet Muhammad, religion or sexual content, according to her complaint.

The lawsuit states Garcia responded to an ad and thought she was appearing in an ancient Egyptian adventure film called "Desert Warriors." Dialogue in the amateurish film was later dubbed to include anti-Islamic messages and to portray Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester, and it was also translated into Arabic.

"The film is vile and reprehensible," Garcia's attorney, M. Cris Armenta, wrote in the document. Her client has received death threats since the film's trailer began drawing attention, and she is no longer able to care for her grandchildren, the lawsuit states.

"This lawsuit is not an attack on the First Amendment nor on the right of Americans to say what they think, but does request that the offending content be removed from the Internet," the complaint states. Garcia's attorneys plan to seek an injunction against the film Thursday in a Los Angeles court.

YouTube has refused Garcia's requests to remove the film, according to the lawsuit. The complaint contends that keeping it online violates her right of publicity, invades her privacy rights and the post-filming dialogue changes cast her in a false light. "(Garcia) had a legally protected interest in her privacy and the right to be free from having hateful words put in her mouth or being depicted as a bigot," the lawsuit states.

YouTube said it is reviewing the complaint and its lawyers will be in court on Thursday. The site is owned by search giant Google and has blocked users in Saudi Arabia, Libya and Egypt from viewing the "Innocence of Muslims" trailer. It has also blocked the video from being viewed in Indonesia and India because it violates laws in those countries.

Garcia, who lives in Bakersfield, Calif., claims her association with the film has harmed her reputation and caused "shame, mortification, and hurt feelings" and will impact her ability to get future acting roles, according to the lawsuit.

A man who answered the phone at the law offices of Steven Seiden, who represents Nakoula on any criminal repercussions he may face, declined comment. He said Seiden does not represent Nakoula, who is on probation for a bank fraud case in which he opened 600 fraudulent credit accounts, in civil matters.

According to the terms of his probation, Nakoula was allowed to only access websites with the permission of probation officials and for work purposes. It is unclear who uploaded the film to the site.

The lawsuit also names Sam Bacile, an alias that Nakoula gave to The Associated Press after the trailer was linked to protests that have since killed at least 30 people in seven countries, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya.
