Only political process can save Syria from "hell": envoy

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Syria faces "hell" if no deal is struck to end 21 months of bloodshed, an international mediator said on Saturday, but his talks in Russia brought no sign of a breakthrough after a week of intense diplomacy.

U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov both said there was still a chance for a negotiated solution to the conflict, which has killed more than 44,000 people and set world powers against one another.

But Lavrov repeated Russia's stance that President Bashar al-Assad's removal cannot be a precondition for a political solution, saying that such demands were "wrong" and that the opposition's refusal to talk to the government was a "dead end".

Brahimi said: "If the only alternative is really hell or a political process, then all of us must work ceaselessly for a political process. It is difficult, it is very complicated, but there is no other choice."

Lavrov issued a similar exhortation in a joint appearance at an ornate mansion where he meets foreign dignitaries, saying: "The chance for a political settlement remains and it is our obligation to make maximal use of that chance."

But no major new initiatives were announced and Lavrov, whose country has vetoed three United Nations Security Council resolutions meant to put pressure on Assad, gave no indication it would back down from that stance.

"When the opposition says only Assad's exit will allow it to begin a dialogue about the future of its own country, we think this is wrong, we think this is rather counterproductive," he said. "The costs of this precondition are more and more lives of Syrian citizens."

Russia has tried to distance itself from Assad for months and seems to have stepped up its calls for a peaceful resolution as the rebels have gained ground against government forces in the conflict, which began with peaceful protests in March 2011 but which has descended into a civil war.

However, Lavrov noted that Assad has said publicly and privately that he would not go, adding that Russia "does not have the ability to change this".

Brahimi is trying to build on a plan agreed in Geneva in June by the United States, Russia and other powers that called for a transitional government but left Assad's role unclear. The United States said the agreement sent a clear signal that Assad should step down, but Russia said it did nothing of the kind.

"The core of that political process ... is and must be the Geneva agreement," said Brahimi, who took over as the U.N.-Arab League envoy after Kofi Annan quit in frustration at divisions among world powers, chiefly the United States and Russia, and the failure of the Geneva accord to bring a resolution closer.

"There may be one or two little adjustments to make here and there, but it is a reasonable basis for a political process that will help the Syrian people," he said, without elaborating.

TALKING ABOUT TALKS

Brahimi said a plan to resolve the conflict could eventually go to the U.N. Security Council for backing, but only if there was confidence it would be effective.

"What we need to have is a resolution that can work, and I think it is possible to get to that stage if we continue to talk," he said.

The Algerian envoy, who met Assad and others on a five-day trip to Syria this week, is to meet senior U.S. and Russian diplomats together in the coming weeks, after two such meetings this month that produced no signs of a breakthrough.

In Damascus on Thursday, Brahimi called for a transitional government to rule until elections in Syria and said only substantial change would meet demands of ordinary Syrians, but did not specify who could be part of such a body.

A spokesman for the opposition National Coalition said on Friday the coalition "will not negotiate with the Assad regime", and its leader rebuffed Russia's first invitation for talks.

The leader, Moaz Alkhatib, said he would not travel to Moscow and issued conditions for talks, demanding that Lavrov apologies for Russia's support for Assad and that Moscow issue a clear call for him to step down.

Lavrov testily rejected those demands, saying the opposition "should think not of their ambitions but about the Syrian people". Nevertheless, he reiterated Russia's readiness to hold the meeting somewhere outside its territory.

"If they think that Russia can play any kind of role in this drama, then they should meet with us," Lavrov said.

Syria has been a major buyer of Russian arms and hosts a modest naval maintenance facility on the Mediterranean that is Russia's only military base outside the former Soviet Union.

President Vladimir Putin has said Russian vetoes and opposition to U.N. sanctions against Syria are driven by the principle of non-interference in sovereign states. He has accused Washington of using human rights concerns to justify efforts to impose its will around the world.

Putin has emphasized that Moscow will not allow a repeat in Syria of last year's events in Libya, where NATO intervention, authorized by the U.N. Security Council after Russia abstained from a vote, helped rebels topple Muammar Gaddafi.

Russia's president signs US adoption ban | MyFOX8.com ...

Posted on: 7:12 am, December 28, 2012, by Ryan Sullivan, updated on: 07:13am, December 28, 2012

(CNN) ? President Vladimir Putin signed a controversial measure banning the adoption of Russian children by U.S. families, the Kremlin said Friday.

The action could affect hundreds of American families seeking to adopt. Americans adopted close to 1,000 Russian children last year, according to U.S. State Department figures.

Though the number has been dropping in recent years, Russia remains the third most popular country for U.S. citizens to adopt after China and Ethiopia.

The U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul tweeted this week that passage of the bill ?saddens? him, but said he?s open to dialogue.

The measure also bars any political activities by nongovernmental organizations receiving funding from the United States, if such activities could affect Russian interests, Russia?s semiofficial RIA-Novosti news agency said.

It also imposes sanctions against U.S. officials thought to have violated human rights.

A vote this week in the Federation Council, Russia?s upper house, was unanimous, but Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized the bill ahead of its signing.

Lawmakers in the State Duma, Russia?s lower house of parliament, adopted it last week.

The move by Russian politicians is widely seen as retaliation for a law that U.S. President Barack Obama signed on December 14. That bill, called the Magnitsky Act, imposes U.S. travel and financial restrictions on human rights abusers in Russia.

?The United States is concerned by measures in the bill passed in the Russian Duma today that, if it becomes law, would halt inter-country adoptions between the United States and Russia and would restrict the ability of Russian civil society organizations to work with American partners,? U.S. State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said last week.

The Magnitsky Act is named in honor of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who uncovered the largest tax fraud in the country?s history in the form of rebates claimed by government officials who stole money from the state. Magnitsky died in 2009 after a year in a Moscow detention center, apparently beaten to death.

The Russian bill?s implementation nullifies a recent agreement between the United States and Russia in which the countries agreed to additional safeguards to protect children and parties involved in inter-country adoptions.

?American families have welcomed more than 60,000 Russian children into American homes over the past 20 years,? Ventrell said last week. ?Just last month we implemented a bilateral adoptions agreement with Russia to improve safeguards for adopted children and their families. If Russian officials have concerns about the implementation of this agreement, we stand ready to work with them to improve it and remain committed to supporting inter-country adoptions between our two countries.?

Only China has more adoptions to the United States than Russia.

Backers of the Russian bill said American adoptive parents have been abusive, citing 19 deaths of Russian children since the 1990s.

In 2010, an American woman caused outrage after she sent her adopted son back to Russia alone on a one-way flight, saying the boy, then 7, had violent episodes that made her family fear for its safety.

Konstantin Dolgov, Russian Foreign Ministry?s Special Representative for Human Rights, said on Twitter that Russia is ?well aware of, and have pointed out more than once, the inadequate protection of adopted Russian children in the US.? He also noted that the United States is one of three nations that has not signed the 1989 U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Anthony Lake, U.N. Children?s Fund executive director, touted the importance of ?inter-country adoption.?

?While welcoming Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev?s call for the improvement of the child welfare system, UNICEF urges that the current plight of the many Russian children in institutions receives priority attention,? Lake said.

UNICEF asked that Russia let children?s ?best interests? guide the ?design and development of all efforts to protect children.?

?We encourage the government to establish a robust national social protection plan to help strengthen Russian families. Alternatives to the institutionalization of children are essential, including permanent foster care, domestic adoption and inter-country adoption,? he said.

The United States has signed but not ratified the convention, which has sparked concerns from conservatives over its impact on U.S. sovereignty and parental rights.

Groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch had urged lawmakers to reject the bill.

?This bill hits back at Russia?s most vulnerable children and could deprive them of the loving families they desperately need,? Hugh Williamson, Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said last week.

John Dalhuisen, Amnesty International?s Europe and Central Asia program director, has said, ?this bill is frankly a childish response to the Magnitsky Act.?

?Change should occur gradually but at all levels: teachers, students ...

As I look back on this year, the Partners in Learning Global Forum in Prague continues to be a highlight. I know this is also the case for many educators, including teacher Marilo Martinez from Spain. ?In Prague at the Partners in Learning Global Forum, I was able to work and reflect on different topics of innovation,? says Martinez. ?Those that I found most interesting and applicable to my school were project-based learning and game-based learning. Both attempt to motivate our students to work differently in a challenging way ? these are new models of learning.?

Martinez teaches at Colegio Marti Sorolla, a Microsoft Pathfinder School. The school strives to be continuously innovative in terms of best pedagogical and technological practices. But perhaps most important, they strive to educate students in values that represent the 21st century learner: cooperation, respect, tolerance, positive thinking, responsibility, commitment, honesty, creativity, solidarity and empathy.

Here, Martinez shares what makes Colegio Marti Sorolla unique, and why innovation is so important today.

What is your proudest professional achievement?

One of the best professional achievements for me was when Microsoft selected my school, Colegio Marti Sorolla, as an Innovative Pathfinder School. The recognition from this award was very much appreciated, and very motivational.

Can you describe the teacher who most influenced you?

One teacher who made an impression on me most was one of my elementary school teachers. In addition to teaching me, this teacher was an important counselor in my life.

Also, fortunately, when I started working at Colegio Marti Sorolla????, I had the opportunity to meet professionals who, despite all odds and daily problems, get excited about their work.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to make a difference in education?

To lead a change in education, there must be support from the school management, as well as from most of the teachers. Change should occur gradually but at all levels: teachers, students and administration. To be truly motivational, it must take into account all the players and their new ideas. On the other hand, when performing a new activity, feedback is a critical component that guides the outcome ? it is essential to listen to students.

Obviously, each school has different resources and needs, but the important thing is to use ICT as a tool to support specific methodology.

What is your greatest hope for the future of education?

In my opinion, working with innovation topics like project-based learning, schools and teachers can find a way to encourage our students to work across different curricula and get them involved in their own learning process. Students can then develop lifelong learning skills, supported by the teachers.

?

MARTI SOROLLA School tries to be continuously innovative in terms of best pedagogical and technological practices.?Workspaces are changing from the traditional classroom to different learning areas, like music room, labs, computer labs and virtual spaces.?We have in mind the personnel?s work, innovation based improvement (pedagogical and technological).?We educate our students in values that we think the XXI century learner must represent: cooperation, respect, tolerance, positive thinking, responsibility, commitment, honesty, creativity, solidarity and empathy.
We belong to various school associations and we attend and give training courses.
Apart from teaching academic contents, we also pay attention to a full development of students as human beings in order to face real situations in their lives.?Our school vision is based on three main pillars: Innovation, Languages and Technology, without forgetting Sports and our Social Projects.

Interesting or innovative practices that take place at our school

Pedagogical innovations

  • We have an I+D department that uses studies on how the brain works to find the best teaching methods.
  • We use the MORE approach (Multiple Options for Results in Education). This method combines different procedures to offer multiple options to achieve success in learning.
  • We use Spencer Kagan?s cooperative learning structures because we believe that working together is the best way to improve as a community as well as individually.
  • We have a team of people focused on investigating new learning methods called Orion Team.
  • In Preschool children are stimulated by means of Early Childhood Intervention using intelligence bits in order to wire their brains.

Technological innovations

Innovation is not based on any software or hardware but in how to use it to its maximum potential. That?s the reason we use technology not as a goal in itself but as part of the learning process (to get and produce information, assessment, communication, virtual workspaces ?).

How we are making an impact

We created a project called ?Pars Pro Toto?, it is part of a bigger one started three years ago. The main goal of this project is to link several subjects focused on the city of Valencia. Every year our students go for a walk to take pictures of the city related with a special theme. This year we connected Literacy with Valencia streets. At the end of it we display the pictures and the three best of them win a prize. Our families and the rest of the school can visit the exhibition. Last year this project won a special mention from de Spanish Culture Ministry as a Creative School.

Members of our staff are invited to share our ICT experience and participate as speakers in schools next to ours, in teacher training courses and CEFIRE;That shows that we are a reference to be taken into account.

How our school is influencing others

Members of our staff are invited to share our ICT experience and participate as speakers in schools next to ours (Soto Mic? Public School), in teacher training courses and CEFIRE.
That shows that we are a reference to be taken into account.
We have teachers specialized and certified in Spencer Kagan?s Cooperative Learning Structures at a national level in charge of training teachers from other schools

Our role as a leader

School cannot exist without innovation because we live in a technological society and school has to prepare for it.?If we want to move forward our students must be ready to face the challenges of a future that is becoming more and more technological.
We have learnt a lot about ourselves and the present and future of our schools.
We learned that innovation in school is a process which needs the implication of all the stakeholders in order to have a real vision where the school is and where it wants to go.
This commitment helps us to plan the actions to make these goals possible, and to assume the innovations necessary to achieve success.

Ways we involve our team

  • Two teachers (Philosophy and Music) created Pars pro Toto project; they organizated an exhibition with all the photographs taken by students in a day walk around different neighborhoods in Valencia; every year (we have done three) the pictures are related to an idea: architecture, time and poetry . Last year this project won a special mention from de Spanish Culture Ministry as a Creative School.
  • Second example : Arranged by the need of giving suport to the learning process it has been created a repository of materials; this platform was created by several teachers in a spontaneous way.

How we recognize and encourage student leadership

  • We want to encourage our students to develop positive leadership skills, having in mind multiple intelligences, giving special importance to emotional intelligence.
  • We encourage the active participation of the students in their daily school life (decision making, projects, problem solving ?.). As we said before, we use Spencer Kagan?s Cooperative learning structures so they assume different roles in the learning process and students are also encouraged to participate in external competitions and projects.

What we hope to achieve by being a Pathfinder School

We want to share:
-make worldwide connections with other institutions involved in the use of technology in schools. The next step is sharing our knowledge and best practices with other educational centers worldwide.
We want to improve:
-we are always looking for new ways of improving our teaching skills. We are sure to find many different points of view and solutions to challenge by being part of a wider international network; we believe that the self-assessment is an essential part of the process of being leader.
We want to learn:
-we think that our school can make a difference by taking part in the program with other leader schools.

Americans from Central African Republic capital evacuated

Reuters

Hundreds protest in front of the French Embassy in the Bangui, Central African Republic, on Wednesday, expressing anger over the lack of response by the former colonial power to rebels advancing on the capital.

?

By NBC News and wire services

U.S. diplomats and other American citizens have been evacuated from the Central African Republic and U.S. embassy operations have been suspended in the capital, Bangui, the State Department said Thursday. The move came as?rebel forces?advanced on the city.

"This decision is solely due to concerns about the security of our personnel and has no relation to our continuing and long-standing diplomatic relations with the (Central African Republic)," said State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell.

Insurgents on motorbikes and in pickup trucks have driven to within 45 miles of Bangui after weeks of fighting, threatening to end President Francois Bozize's nearly 10-year rule over the turbulent, resource-rich country.

Bozize appealed to the United States and France to help push back the rebels.

Some U.S. Special Forces are operating in the country, trying to track down the Lords Resistance Army, a rebel group responsible for killing thousands of civilians across four African nations.?There was no indication that these forces would be used to aid Bozize against the advancing insurgents.

Earlier a senior defense official told NBC News that there were "several hundred" civilians, including Americans and citizens of close U.S. allies who may be evacuated, but comments by the State Department's Ventrell suggested fewer had left:?

"Ambassador (Laurence) Wohlers and his diplomatic team left Bangui today along with several private U.S. citizens," according to Ventrell.

The non-combatant evacuation operation transported "U.S. citizens and designated foreign nationals to safe havens in the region," according to a statement from?Defense Department spokesman Todd Breasseale. The flight out of Bangui was "wheels up" at about 7:15 p.m. ET.?

Paris said its troops would protect French nationals, but not be involved in repelling the rebels.?

Some 1,200 French nationals live in the CAR, mostly in the capital, according to the French Foreign Ministry, where they typically work for mining firms or aid groups.

French nuclear energy group Areva mines the Bakouma uranium deposit in the CAR's south ? France's biggest commercial interest in its former colony.?

Bozize on Thursday appealed for French and U.S. military support to stop the SELEKA rebel coalition, which has promised to overthrow him unless he implements a previous peace deal in full.

France: 'Those days are over'
He told a crowd of anti-rebel protesters in the riverside capital that he had asked Paris and Washington to help move the rebels away from the capital to clear the way for peace talks which regional leaders say could be held soon in Libreville, Gabon.

"We are asking our cousins the French and the United States, which are major powers, to help us push back the rebels to their initial positions in a way that will permit talks in Libreville to resolve this crisis," Bozize said.

Central African Republic President Francois Bozize in 2008.

France has 250 soldiers in its landlocked former colony as part of a peacekeeping mission and Paris in the past has ousted or propped up governments ? including by using air strikes to defend Bozize against rebels in 2006.

But French President Francois Hollande poured cold water on the latest request for help.

"If we have a presence, it's not to protect a regime, it's to protect our nationals and our interests and in no way to intervene in the internal business of a country, in this case the Central African Republic," Hollande said on the sidelines of a visit to a wholesale food market outside Paris.

"Those days are over," he said.

France is increasingly reluctant to directly intervene in conflicts in its former colonies. Since coming to power in May, Hollande has promised to put ties with its former colonies on a healthier footing.

The rebel advance has highlighted the instability of a country that has remained poor since independence from Paris in 1960 despite rich deposits of uranium, gold and diamonds. Average income is barely over $2 a day.

Regional African leaders, meantime, tried to broker a ceasefire deal and rebels said they had temporarily halted their advance on Bangui to allow talks to take place.

Officials from around central Africa were to meet in Bangui later on Thursday to open initial talks with the government and rebels.

A rebel spokesman said fighters had temporarily halted their advance to allow dialogue.

"We will not enter Bangui," Col. Djouma Narkoyo, the rebel spokesman, told Reuters by telephone.

Previous rebel promises to stop advancing have been broken, and a diplomatic source said rebels had taken up positions around Bangui on Thursday, effectively surrounding it.

The atmosphere remained tense in Bangui the day after anti-rebel protests broke out, and residents were stocking up on food and water.

Government soldiers deployed at strategic sites and French troops reinforced security at the French embassy after protesters threw rocks at the building on Wednesday.

Bozize came to power in a 2003 rebellion that overthrew President Ange-Felix Patasse.

The government holds little sway outside the capital, and in some parts of the country, the consequences of conflicts in troubled neighbors Chad, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo have spilled over.

Former President George H.W. Bush in intensive care

HOUSTON (AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush has been admitted to the intensive care unit at a Houston hospital "following a series of setbacks including a persistent fever," but he is alert and talking to medical staff, his spokesman said Wednesday.

Jim McGrath, Bush's spokesman in Houston, said in a brief email that Bush was admitted to the ICU at Methodist Hospital on Sunday. He said doctors are cautiously optimistic about his treatment and that the former president "remains in guarded condition."

No other details were released about his medical condition, but McGrath said Bush is surrounded by family.

The 88-year-old has been hospitalized since Nov. 23, when he was admitted for a lingering cough related to bronchitis after having been in and out of the hospital for complications related to the illness.

Earlier Wednesday, McGrath said a fever that kept Bush in the hospital over Christmas had gotten worse and that doctors had put him on a liquids-only diet.

"It's an elevated fever, so it's actually gone up in the last day or two," McGrath told The Associated Press. "It's a stubborn fever that won't go away."

But he said the cough that initially brought Bush to the hospital has improved.

Bush, the oldest former U.S. president, was visited on Christmas by his wife, Barbara, his son, Neil, and Neil's wife, Maria, and a grandson, McGrath said. Bush's daughter, Dorothy, was expected to arrive Wednesday in Houston from Bethesda, Md. The 41st president has also been visited twice by his sons, George W. Bush, the 43rd president, and Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida.

Bush and his wife live in Houston during the winter and spend their summers at a home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The former president was a naval aviator in World War II ? at one point the youngest in the Navy ? and was shot down over the Pacific. He achieved notoriety in retirement for skydiving on at least three of his birthdays since leaving the White House in 1992.

West Coast girds for more tsunami debris in winter

In this file photo taken by Canadian Peter Mark in the end of April, 2012 shows a Harley-Davidson motorbike that lies on a beach in Graham Island, western Canada. Japanese media say the motorcycle lost in last year's tsunami washed up on the island about 6,400 kilometers (4,000 miles) away. The rusted bike was originally found in a large white container where its owner had kept it. The container was later washed away, leaving the motorbike half-buried in the sand. LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Volunteers who patrol California beaches for plastic, cigarette butts and other litter will be on the lookout this winter for flotsam from last year's monstrous tsunami off Japan's coast.

Armed with index-size cards, beachcombers will log water bottles, buoys, fishing gear and other possessions that might have sailed across the Pacific to the 1,100-mile shoreline.

The March 2011 disaster washed about 5 million tons of debris into the sea. Most of that sank, leaving an estimated 1 1/2 million tons afloat. No one knows how much debris ? strewn across an area three times the size of the United States ? is still adrift.

Tsunami flotsam has already touched the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii this year. The West Coast is bracing for more sightings in the coming months as seasonal winds and coastal currents tend to drive marine wreckage ashore.

Like the past winter, scientists expect the bulk of the debris to end up in Alaska, Washington state, Oregon and British Columbia. Last week, the Coast Guard spotted a massive dock that possibly came from Japan on a wilderness beach in Washington state.

Given recent storm activity, Northern California could see "scattered and intermittent" episodes, said Peter Murphy, a marine debris expert at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which recently received a $5 million donation from Japan to track and remove tsunami debris.

To prepare, state coastal regulators have launched a cleanup project to document possible tsunami items that churn ashore. Working with environmental groups, volunteers will scour beaches with a checklist. It's like a typical beach cleanup, but the focus will be to locate articles from Japan.

Until now, efforts in California have been haphazard. The goal is to organize tsunami debris cleanups at least once every season stretching from the Oregon state line to the Mexican border and then posting the findings online.

Debris from Asia routinely floats to the U.S. It's extremely difficult to link something back to the Japanese tsunami without a serial number, phone number or other marker.

Of the more than 1,400 tsunami debris sightings reported to NOAA, the agency only traced 17 pieces back to the event, including small fishing boats, soccer balls, a dock and a shipping container housing a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with Japanese license plates. No confirmed tsunami debris so far has reached California.

Even in the absence of a direct connection, California coastal managers said it helps to know if a beach is being covered with more marine debris than usual.

"We want to get an idea of where to focus our efforts. We have limited resources," said Eben Schwartz, marine debris program manager at the California Coastal Commission, which heads the $50,000 NOAA-funded project. "If we see the problem is hitting the north coast and not getting as far south as San Francisco, that tells us where to focus."

Last summer, NOAA awarded $250,000 to five West Coast states to help with tsunami debris removal. Alaska spent its share to clean up a 25-mile stretch of beach before the weather turned too bitter. Hawaii and Washington state have yet to dip into their funds.

Oregon racked up $240,000 to remove debris on beaches including a 66-foot dock that broke loose from the port of Misawa during the tsunami and splashed ashore over the summer. Part of the tab ? $50,000 ? was covered by NOAA.

Charlie Plybon, Oregon's regional manager at the Surfrider Foundation, said the tsunami has raised beachgoers' awareness about marine debris plaguing the world's coastlines.

"There's a bit of tsunami debris fever. It's like an Easter egg hunt," said Plybon, who has been cleaning up the Oregon coast for more than a decade. "People used to walk past debris. Now they want to be engaged."

Health experts have said debris arriving on the West Coast is unlikely to be radioactive after having crossed thousands of miles of ocean. Tsunami waves swamped a nuclear power plant and swept debris into the ocean. The debris field, which once could be spotted from satellite and aerial photos, has dispersed. More than 18,000 residents were killed or went missing.

Volunteer Julie Walters has combed Mussel Rock Beach south of San Francisco for wreckage, but all that's turned up so far are wave-battered boat parts and lumber of unknown origin.

If she did find an object with a direct link, "I would find it quite intriguing that it made this incredible journey across the Pacific," said Walters, a volunteer with the Pacifica Beach Coalition. "It would also sadden me to think of the human tragedy."

GaryMoller.com - Health, Fitness - Naturally!: How things that may ...

One thing that really bugs me is the way that prescribing in medicine ignores one of the most fundamental concepts of nutrition:

The Goldilocks Zone: Not too little and not too much

Too little of a nutrient will result in ill health.

Too much of a nutrient will result in ill health.

The key to prescribing is to get things just right! ?The Goldilocks Zone.

Its what you expect of teenage boys trying to bulk up with protein powder. ?Its not what you expect of trained health professionals.

Cells are bathed in a nutrient rich fluid. ?We nourish them by supplying a steady intake of nutrients. ?The last thing a cell wants is a tsunami of a nutrient. ?We would never, ever do that to plants in our vege garden would we? ?We would kill the plants if we gave a month's worth of nutrients in a single hit. ?So why do doctors do this to their patients?

Its madness.

Physiotherapy is similarly affected by this suspension of reality

When we prescribe exercise we apply stress to the body. ?We give only sufficient stress to stimulate a strong compensatory response to build more robust structures. ?This response takes from two to four days of relative rest to be complete.?

We therefore have the rule of consistently cycling between exercise and recovery: Basically one day of exercise, followed by two days of rest, then one more day of exercise etc.

If we break this rule and exercise hard daily, our risk of illness and injury skyrockets. ?All serious athletes know this. ?Apparently, many physiotherapists have never learned this, or have long forgotten.

With physiotherapy, it is common to have injured people instructed to perform sometimes strenuous exercise on a daily basis. ?This is wrong. ?A set of exercises are best performed every second or third day. ?If one is to exercise in between, then it should be an exercise that stresses the body in a different way. ?So if one lifts weights today, they should go for a walk or swim the following day - not lift more weights.

The only exceptions to this rule are activities like cycling, rowing, walking and swimming. ?Lifting weights, stretching cords and running require at least one rest day between sessions.

10 of the Biggest, Boldest Builds of 2012

The home base of the 2012 Summer Olympics managed to be big and bold but minimalist at the same time. The oval-shaped centerpiece of the new Olympic Park seated 80,000 for the Olympics, but used just 10,000 tons of steel?the Bird's Nest in Beijing featured 42,000 tons. The final result of the architects' materials-cutting was a stadium 75 percent lighter than it would have been if designers had gone with a full-concrete version. Today crews are retracting the stadium even more, pulling away the fabric roof and Lego-like steel supports to create a final-use stadium that seats just 25,000. It won't be as spectacular as the Olympic guise. But, hey, it's better than letting Olympic venues fall into disrepair.

Resistance to cocaine addiction may be passed down from father to son

Dec. 16, 2012 ? Research from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) reveals that sons of male rats exposed to cocaine are resistant to the rewarding effects of the drug, suggesting that cocaine-induced changes in physiology are passed down from father to son. The findings are published in the latest edition of Nature Neuroscience.

"We know that genetic factors contribute significantly to the risk of cocaine abuse, but the potential role of epigenetic influences -- how the expression of certain genes related to addiction is controlled -- is still relatively unknown," said senior author R. Christopher Pierce, PhD, associate professor of Neuroscience in Psychiatry at Penn. "This study is the first to show that the chemical effects of cocaine use can be passed down to future generations to cause a resistance to addictive behavior, indicating that paternal exposure to toxins such as cocaine can have profound effects on gene expression and behavior in their offspring."

In the current study, the team used an animal model to study inherited effects of cocaine abuse. Male rats self-administered cocaine for 60 days, while controls were administered saline. The male rats were mated with females that had never been exposed to the drug. To eliminate any influence that the males' behavior would have on the pregnant females, they were separated directly after they mated.

The rats' offspring were monitored to see whether they would begin to self-administer cocaine when it was offered to them. The researchers discovered that male offspring of rats exposed to the drug, but not the female offspring, acquired cocaine self-administration more slowly and had decreased levels of cocaine intake relative to controls. Moreover, control animals were willing to work significantly harder for a single cocaine dose than the offspring of cocaine-addicted rats, suggesting that the rewarding effect of cocaine was decreased.

In collaboration with Ghazaleh Sadri-Vakili, MS, PhD, from MGH, the researchers subsequently examined the animals' brains and found that male offspring of the cocaine-addicted rats had increased levels of a protein in the prefrontal cortex called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is known to blunt the behavioral effects of cocaine.

"We were quite surprised that the male offspring of sires that used cocaine didn't like cocaine as much," said Pierce. "While we identified one change in the brain that appears to underlie this cocaine resistance effect, there are undoubtedly other physiological changes as well and we are currently performing more broad experiments to identify them. We also are eager to perform similar studies with more widely used drugs of abuse such as nicotine and alcohol."

The findings suggest that cocaine use causes epigenetic changes in sperm, thereby reprogramming the information transmitted between generations. The researchers don't know exactly why only the male offspring received the cocaine-resistant trait from their fathers, but speculate that sex hormones such as testosterone, estrogen and/or progesterone may play a role.

Feng Shui Guide | Metaphysics Knowledge

There are many believes all over the world about how a home or office can be improved by improving the energy levels. This is an age old study and has been termed different in different parts of the world. In India it is called Vastu. The same study is called Feng Shui in China and Japan. It is primarily a Chinese concept that was later accepted by the whole world. The subject is a part of astrology. The modern scientists do belive that there is some substance in the study and the theories that they propagate are not all that meaningless after all. We will in this article tell you a little bit about feng Shui and also give you a feng Shui guide that will help you to make your homes a better place to stay and office a better place to work.

It was traditionally used to design houses and buildings. It is interesting that the study was used to even construct tombs. The study considers the four directions (east, west, south and north) as the basis of all its designs. The different forms of schools under feng Shui are the form school, compass school, transmission of traditional feng Shui techniques, and current usage of traditional schools. It is still taught as a subject to students so that they can implement the principles in modern day architecture.

The topic has always been debatable. People have often questioned the authenticity of feng Shui as a reliable source. On the other hand some believe that it is a very useful tool and a knowledge base. Whatever the thought maybe is not important. Let?s not get into the argument. The fact remains that there are some simple tips of Feng Shui guide that we are going to discuss in this article. You can implement them and see the results yourself.

If you are building a new house and looking forward to construct it as per Feng Shui guide then you can follow these simple points. You can also use these at the time of renovation of your house. Well before we move any further we would like to state that you either try to follow Feng Shui guide or the vastu guide. Following both will not lead you anywhere. It will only add to the complication. The basic principle on which Feng Shui guide is based on is to use the various energy and elements of nature in such a way that we get the maximum results from it. Let?s start with the bedroom. It should always have big windows that will allow fresh air to move into the room. The windows should be located in such a way that they can be kept open most of the time. The lights in a bedroom should be dim. You should keep them as less as possible. The use of Feng Shui candles in the evening can create a nice atmosphere to relax in the bedroom. The colours of the bedroom wall should be as soothing as possible. The experts say that the colour should be your skin colour. This will give a better and relaxed feel when you enter the room. The paintings or pictures that you put in your bedroom should be happy and smiling ones. These will ensure that you are happy and relaxed. You should have two side tables at both the corner of the bed. The bed should not be facing the door. The colour of your bed sheet should a light one that will match with the texture of the room. When you sleep at bedroom and the attached bathrooms doors should be closed. The Feng Shui guide clearly states that you must keep the closets in your bedroom in well managed condition. This will removes stress from your life. You must not keep any television or electric gadget in your bedroom. This will distract the energies and may give you disturbed sleep.

Natural plants in the house are a good idea as it increases the oxygen levels and adds to the beauty of the house. ?However, as per the Feng Shui guide no natural plants should be kept in the bedroom. This is so because plants give out carbon dioxide at night. Similarly keeping an aquarium is not advised in a bedroom. It can be kept in the living room of the house. Water fountain or images of water is also not advised in a bedroom this is so because water can kill fire. Fire is associated with sexual life that?s why if you want to enjoy a good love life try keeping the water elements away from the bed room. Even a huge mirror is not recommended in the bedroom. It should be kept in a separate dressing area.

The living room must be in the southern or south western part of the house. You can use lively colours like shades of red and orange to paint the living room. The furniture of this room must we well arranged. The best way to arrange it is just imagine that water is flowing in the room and the furniture should be placed in such a way that they water?s flow is not obstructed at all. The room must not be cluttered else it will not give a happy feeling. Any object of sharp energy level should not be kept in the living room. The living room should have a lot of natural light flowing into it. You can also keep a fire place in the living room. The direction should be South East. Try not to keep the fire place and the aquarium very close to each other as they both being fire and water elements may contradict each other and create a bad energy level. The living room is a place where we spend a lot of time so we should keep the energy levels of the room to the best. You can also place a mystic knot wind chime in your house. This protects the house and enhances the inflow of wealth. However, it should always be placed in the East window of the house. If placed anywhere else it might attract evil spirits. Another useful tip in the Feng Shui guide about the living room is to use fresh flowers for decoration. This will give a nice feel to the room. You can also place them on the dining table.

The next room that we are going to discuss in the feng Shui guide is the kitchen. You can plant some herbs or have a small kitchen garden. The smell of fresh leaves and herbs can make cooking a better experience. This area should be clean and not cluttered. A good amount if sunlight should enter the kitchen so that there is no chance for germs to grow. The colour used should be warm. The stove should be kept in the south or the south west direction. If you are making a new home remember that the stove should not face the north direction ever. You can put a mirror in the kitchen as it will increase the size of it. If you have a small kitchen then ensure that you buy only as much as required. Don?t buy any unnecessary stuff that you might not use.

We now move on to what the Feng Shui guide has to say about bathrooms in your house. It should never be placed in the centre of the house. It should be constructed in the South West direction of the house. You can use bright colours of fire element in the bathroom. You can also keep it in the west. Never keep a bathroom over the bedroom. A mirror just outside the bathroom is a good idea. It will not let the energy leave the bathroom. You must keep the bathroom spacious so that you can also convert it to a spa when you feel like. Always ensure that the bathroom is ventilated and fresh air can come in. you must see to it that the bathroom is not very dark. The bathroom should be kept clean. The lights in the bathroom should be less so that you can relax in here. The Feng Shui guide recommends the used of scented candles in the bathroom. This will keep the air fresh. You can also place fresh flowers in the bathroom.

The children room or the nursery is the next that we are going to discuss as per the Feng Shui guide. Let?s first start with the nursery. A friend of mine spent a lot of money in designing a nursery. However, the new baby would not be able to get any sleep in this room. As soon as she would put her to sleep the baby would get up. This was not the case in any other room of the house. She once told me to come and check the room. Well the room was beautiful no doubt but it was too bright, there were a lot of toys in the room that were not required. They also had too many pug points and electrical appliances in the room. I suggested her same Feng Shui tips that I am going to discuss now. After that the baby had no trouble sleeping in that room. The baby?s cot should never be place in line with the door. You should never keep any electrical appliances in the nursery of the baby. You can only keep a walky talky that?s all. Paint the room with light pastel colours. No need to make a lot of paintings on the walls. The toys should be minimal and all should be kept in place. A small baby does not need toys that he or she can play only after years. The light in a baby?s nursery should be dim. This should be on all the time when the baby is sleeping. Sunlight and fresh air are another important factor when you design a nursery. These elements should be in abundance. Keep the nursery close to your room. A television or use of a laptop near the baby when it is sleeping is a big no. These hinder their sleep as the energy that they give out is not good at all. In case you too are facing the same issues with your baby?s nursery then we recommend that you get these tips in place and you will be delighted to see how well your baby is sleeping and is slowly becoming a happy and healthy baby.

The Feng Shui guide also has a good lot of points on how the children room should be. We are about to discuss the same in this article now. Well as the nursery the kids room should also be well ventilated and have a lot of sunshine coming in. The furniture should be light and without sharp edges so that they don?t hurt themselves. There should be enough space so that they can play around. As far as possible keep the electric plugs less. No television or music system should be installed in the room as far as possible. These will distract the energy from the room. In a children room you should put in good lights so that they don?t fall off and can study easily. Don?t let toys and other stuff clutter the room. Discipline the kids so that they keep their toys and things in place. A good habit can help them a long way. The colour of a kid room depends on their nature. A shy kid should have a warm colour on the walls. An unruly child may be given light colours to calm them down, etc. You can keep a dim light on for the child to sleep well. Like your own bed room the kid?s room can also be in the same direction.

If you are a person who works a lot from home then you can do the following things as per the Feng Shui guide. If possible try to keep the entry of the office and the home separate. The home office should not be anywhere close to the bedroom. Keep some plants in the office. Try to use colours that inspire you on the walls. The desk should not be in line with the door. Try to face a window while you work. The study room can be in the North Area of the house. These simple tips can help you enjoy a better work life.

The main door of the house should be south facing. They can be green, brown or pink in colour. Black is not recommended. However, if you have a north facing door then you can use black as an option.

Just follow this simple Feng Shui guide and you will be amazed to see the results. It will slowly make a significant change in your life. You actually don?t have to be an expert on the Feng Shui guide. You can just follow these simple principles that are all. I hope you have understood all the concepts and points of a Feng Shui guide. This is a list of few tips that can definitely make a big difference in your life. So what are you waiting for just implement the basic changes that have been suggested, and enjoy the magical effect that these will bring in your life and life of your family.

Aerobic exercise trumps resistance training for weight and fat loss

Dec. 15, 2012 ? Aerobic training is the best mode of exercise for burning fat, according to Duke researchers who compared aerobic training, resistance training, and a combination of the two.

The study, which appears Dec. 15, 2012, in the Journal of Applied Physiology, is the largest randomized trial to analyze changes in body composition from the three modes of exercise in overweight or obese adults without diabetes.

Aerobic exercise -- including walking, running, and swimming -- has been proven to be an effective way to lose weight. However, recent guidelines have suggested that resistance training, which includes weight lifting to build and maintain muscle mass, may also help with weight loss by increasing a person's resting metabolic rate. Research has demonstrated health benefits for resistance training, such as improving glucose control, but studies on the effects of resistance training on fat mass have been inconclusive.

"Given that approximately two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight due to excess body fat, we want to offer clear, evidence-based exercise recommendations that will truly help people lose weight and body fat," said Leslie H. Willis, MS, an exercise physiologist at Duke Medicine and the study's lead author.

Researchers enrolled 234 overweight or obese adults in the study. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three exercise training groups: resistance training (three days per week of weight lifting, three sets per day, 8-12 repetitions per set), aerobic training (approximately 12 miles per week), or aerobic plus resistance training (three days a week, three set per day, 8-12 repetitions per set for resistance training, plus approximately 12 miles per week of aerobic exercise).

The exercise sessions were supervised in order to accurately measure adherence among participants. Data from 119 people who completed the study and had complete body composition data were analyzed to determine the effectiveness of each exercise regimen.

The groups assigned to aerobic training and aerobic plus resistance training lost more weight than those who did just resistance training. The resistance training group actually gained weight due to an increase in lean body mass.

Aerobic exercise was also a more efficient method of exercise for losing body fat. The aerobic exercise group spent an average of 133 minutes a week training and lost weight, while the resistance training group spent approximately 180 minutes exercising a week without shedding pounds.

The combination exercise group, while requiring double the time commitment, provided a mixed result. The regimen helped participants lose weight and fat mass, but did not significantly reduce body mass nor fat mass over aerobic training alone. This group did notice the largest decrease in waist circumference, which may be attributed to the amount of time participants spent exercising.

Resting metabolic rate, which determines how many calories are burned while at rest, was not directly measured in this study. While theories suggest that resistance training can improve resting metabolic rates and therefore aid in weight loss, in this study, resistance training did not significantly decrease fat mass nor body weight irrespective of any change in resting metabolic rate that might have occurred.

"No one type of exercise will be best for every health benefit," Willis added. "However, it might be time to reconsider the conventional wisdom that resistance training alone can induce changes in body mass or fat mass due to an increase in metabolism, as our study found no change."

Duke researchers added that exercise recommendations are age-specific. For older adults experiencing muscle atrophy, studies have found resistance training to be beneficial. However, younger, healthy adults or those looking to lose weight would see better results doing aerobic training.

"Balancing time commitments against health benefits, our study suggests that aerobic exercise is the best option for reducing fat mass and body mass," said Cris A. Slentz, PhD, a Duke exercise physiologist and study co-author. "It's not that resistance training isn't good for you; it's just not very good at burning fat."

In addition to Willis and Slentz, Duke study authors include Lori A. Bateman, Lucy W. Piner, Connie W. Bales, and William E. Kraus. East Carolina University study authors include A. Tamlyn Shields and Joseph A. Houmard.

The study was funded with a grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health (2R01-HL057354).
