FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) ? Defense attorneys argued as an army officer's court martial opened Tuesday that a private found dead in Afghanistan killed himself amid the stress of strained family ties and not because of alleged ethnic hazing by their client.

Sgt. Adam Holcomb of Youngstown, Ohio, is the first of eight men facing prosecution in connection with last October's death of 19-year-old Pvt. Danny Chen. Holcomb faces several charges, the most serious of which is negligent homicide. If convicted on all charges, he faces nearly 18 years in prison.

Military officials have said the private shot himself last year in Afghanistan after weeks of emotional and physical abuse that constituted hazing.

But defense attorneys argued in opening statements that Chen told fellow soldiers he had been disowned for joining the military, which they attributed to the cause of his stress. Holcomb's attorneys said when trial opened that the sergeant didn't cause Chen's death.

"There's one and only one person responsible for the death of private Chen," said defense attorney, Capt. Dennis Hernon. "That person is Danny Chen."

Chen's relationship with his family was a focal point Tuesday as 10 jurors looked on amid questioning of the man's mother, the opening witness.

Su Zhen Chen testified Tuesday that she had had a good relationship with her son and kept in touch with him during his deployment. She said claims of strained family relations were untrue.

"He's my only son," Chen said in between sobs. "Why would I disown my only son?"

Prosecutors argued that Holcomb had a history of using hate speech and allegedly dragged Chen across rocky ground at one point in Afghanistan.

For months, beginning in training, soldiers in his platoon peppered him with racial insults such as "Jackie Chen" and "Dragon Lady," his family has told authorities. On the day he died, they say he was forced to crawl about 100 yards across gravel carrying his equipment while his fellow soldiers threw rocks at him.

Chen had been deployed for two months when he was found dead in a guardhouse. Attorneys said Tuesday he shot himself in the head.

Hernon argued for the defense that Chen was an incompetent soldier, and that Chen's superior officers took appropriate corrective actions. He also said Holcomb called Chen "Dragon Lady," but argued that the nickname was meant "affectionately."

Besides Holcomb, four other soldiers are also charged with negligent homicide. The judge's decision in Holcomb's case could be an indicator for the other soldiers.

Chen was a member of the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division based in Fort Wainwright, Alaska, but was under the command of a Fort Bragg general in Afghanistan.

Maj. Gen. James Huggins requested the trial be transferred to Fort Bragg, which military officials said worked out better logistically.

The trial has attracted international attention, including coverage by a group of reporters from China who watched Tuesday's proceeding.

Elizabeth OuYang, president of the New York chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans, a nonprofit advocacy group that worked with the Chen family, accompanied the family to the court martial. She said some people in China see the trial as an indicator for how the U.S. military treats Chinese.

Hugh Laurie's casting seemed like the icing on the cake when it was announced a month ago, but [...]

COMMUNITY JOURNALISM: On the road at RAGBRAI, Day 1

RAGBRAI participants get ready for the first leg on Sunday morning.

Editor?s note: Dale Bieber and David Sojka of the Bicyclists of Iowa City have agreed to send us daily reports from the Register?s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, which will make a stop in Cedar Rapids. The ride started today:

Here is David?s report:

At 6:14 a.m.: The first bikers were up at 430 this morning. 6 AM and time to hit the road. We can see rain on the horizon.

At 8:43 a.m.:?Today?s ride is 54 miles. One of the shorter days this week. Initially a nice morning, overcast and cool. However the wind has picked up and we now have a moderate head wind. Only rolling hills so far ? 22 miles in at this point. My brunch target ?Mr. Pork chop? awaits me 6 miles ahead.

At 1:18 p.m.:?Done for today ? ?55 miles. It is warming up rapidly, head winds were stronger than I expected today. ? All the pass through towns were well prepared for the masses. The usual teams are here.? One of my favorites ?The Donner Party? they eat the slow ones.???????????? Another rider was decked out in Hawkeye garb, pulling a black and gold speaker box that played the Iowa fight song over and over. This brought a response from the Badgers, Jayhawks, Huskers and Cyclones ? ? 65 miles tomorrow and its heating up.

The camp site on Saturday.

Here is Dale?s report:

Believe it or not, Souix Center had a little rain Saturday night.

About half the campers left the rainfly off the top of their tents as a way of dealing with the heat, and they got a little surprise when the sprinkles stated. I just had to close the ?windows? on my hot little tent about 2 a.m.. I found the best piece of sleeping equipment I brought was the noise suppressing headsets I wear when mowing the lawn?- cut out the rock concert noises and even some of the fireworks. And the air mattress didn?t leak ? Hallelujah.

This morning got the tent packed, handed off my luggage to the BIC crew truck, and I was on the road at 6:08. To me that felt reasonably early, but there were about 1,000 people ahead of me, and the road front and back, as far as the eye could see in the growing morning light, was cyclists taking over the road.

The RAGBRAI web page offers the helpful suggestion that to prepare for this you should ride 1,000 miles after the snow is gone and the temperatures warm up in Iowa. There is a problem with that. I figured out that I ride about 12 miles an hour when I am riding for more than an hour at a time, and if you divide 12 mph into 1,000 miles you get 83.3333 hours. The organizers don?t tell you how to find 83 hours in an already busy life. Nor did they tell you how to find 83 hours when the temperature wasn?t over 95 this summer.

I did my first training ride of 7 miles to work (taking the long way) but if I am late leaving work in the evening, I have to take the shorter 3 mile route home. I rode 15 miles twice on the level roads during our beach vacation in June, then rode 30 miles twice and 40 miles once. The BIC and other strongly suggest that you ride 50 miles at least one day (that will about shoot your Saturday or Sunday recreational time) before RAGBRAI. That was a milestone a hadn?t met yet. So I have this little niggling worry that I may be under-prepared for this. Still, at least my legs are skinny, so I must be doing something right as far as bicyclists are concerned.

Today?s ride was 57 miles. Started out in the wonderful little dutch town of Orange City, complete with windmill and a man making wooden shoes. On to breakfast at Alton ? the firemen had a great breakfast of all you could eat for $5 ? pancakes, sausages, eggs, juice, croissants. Wow!

By Granville at 8:30 it was time to put on the suntan lotion and sunglasses, and groan about the bit of headwind heading south to Marcus. There was some great pie (raspberry) that called my name along the way, and an ice cream cone in Marcus. At one roadside stop I saw a fella happily munching on a pork chop at least an inch thick, but I don?t usually do pork chops before 10 a.m.. Surprisingly level road ? I don?t think I can expect that to continue forever. Along the way there were thousands of friendly happy Iowa citizens, just waving ?Hi!? and wishing us well. I carried an empty gallon milk jug in my back pack filled with water, but I don?t think I will do that again ? it weighs about 8 pounds, and there are plenty of water opportunities on the way. One of the nicest things I saw today was an Iowa Conservation tent out in the middle of nowhere giving out free bananas, water and postcards that they were going to mail for free.

So I wrote one to the kids on the spot and handed it in to them.

After a WONDERFUL downhill stretch just at the edge of town, I made Cherokee about 11:30 a.m., found the BIC campsite and then a shady spot for my rapidly drying out tent. The library in Cherokee kindly decided to open on a Sunday afternoon, so RAGBRAIers would have an air-conditioned spot to do email (or just rest and snooze). That?s Iowa for you! ?And that is RAGRBAI.

Now to find a church with a good supper and not too long a line out the door.

History-maker Wiggins wins Tour de France

Bradley Wiggins has been crowned Britain's first Tour de France champion, becoming an instant sporting hero at home just ahead of the London Olympics -- in which he hopes to star again.

Wiggins, who had virtually sealed victory the previous day, finished the three-week, 3,479km epic with a 3min 21sec lead over British team-mate Chris Froome after Sunday's 20th and last stage to Paris.

He also helped Sky team-mate Mark Cavendish to secure an unprecedented fourth consecutive stage win on the Champs-Elysees.

"It's been a magical couple of weeks for the team and for British cycling," Wiggins told the massed throngs who had besieged France's famous thoroughfare, many waving British flags.

"Some dreams come true," he added, after securing the famous yellow jersey in the largely ceremonial final leg.

Wiggins, who received huge support from his Sky team-mates during the gruelling rides through the Alps and the Pyrenees, promised to return the favour and help Cavendish secure Olympic gold in London.

"I'm more than happy," said world champion Cavendish as he held his newborn baby at the finish line. "The Champs Elysees is the most beautiful avenue in the world, and I've won here again."

Three years after Wiggins equalled Robert Millar's 1984 best British finish of fourth overall, the Belgian-born Londoner finally achieved his childhood dream of winning the world's most prestigious bike race.

"It's magnificent," said Wiggins. "For us to finish like this as a team, helping Mark to victory and allowing him to defend his record here... it's incredible."

Team Sky achieved the rare feat of a 1-2 on the podium, the first since 1996, when Dane Bjarne Riis finished ahead of his German team-mate at Telekom, Jan Ullrich.

Italian Vincenzo Nibali of the Liquigas team finished third overall, six minutes and 19 seconds behind Wiggins.

It is also the first time compatriots have taken the first two places since France's Laurent Fignon finished ahead of five-time winner Bernard Hinault in the 1984 edition.

British Prime Minister David Cameron led the tributes, calling Wiggins' victory an "immense feat of physical and mental ability".

"I'm like everyone in the country -- absolutely delighted," he told Sky News.

"I think the whole country wants to say well done, brilliant -- the perfect backdrop and start to the Olympics."

Frenchman Thomas Voeckler of Europcar won the polka dot jersey for the race's best climber, with Slovakian Peter Sagan of the Liquigas team easily securing the green jersey for the points competition.

American Tejay Van Garderen made up for BMC team leader Cadel Evans' disastrous title defence by winning the race's white jersey for the best-placed rider aged 25 and under.

Van Garderen was fifth at 11:04 while Evans, who made history for Australia in 2011, eventually finished nearly 16 minutes adrift.

RadioShack's best finisher was Spaniard Haimar Zubeldia, but the American team topped the coveted teams' classification, allowing them a podium appearance.

Dane Chris Anker Sorensen, of Saxo Bank, was also afforded that pleasure when he was awarded the overall "most aggressive" rider prize.

In a campaign that was reminiscent of his childhood hero, Spanish legend Miguel Indurain, Wiggins' two time-trial wins on stages nine and 19 proved decisive.

However the Briton's Sky team, and especially Kenyan-born Froome, were omnipresent in the mountain stages in between.

"He's been incredible throughout the whole Tour," Wiggins, whose mountain pace-setters proved so efficient that few riders were able to sustain their attacks, said of fellow Briton Froome.

Sagan was more than happy with his tour debut despite being pipped by Cavendish on the Champs Elysees.

"I came here to win a stage, so to come away with three plus the green jersey is just unbelievable," said Sagan, who finished with a 141-point margin over German sprinter Andre Greipel.

Voeckler's two stage wins among a total of three for his Europcar team meant French riders won a total of five of the race's 20 stages.

However Britain, thanks exclusively to Team Sky, won six. Cavendish won three to take his tally to 23, Wiggins won both time trials and Froome won the first hilltop finish on stage seven.

"It's been a very successful race for Team Sky, first and second on GC (general classification) and we've won six stages," said Cavendish.

"It's been incredible to be part of."

The British press on Monday agreed.

Popular tabloid The Sun said "a new British hero", comparing Wiggins to cricketer Ian Botham, footballer Bobby Moore and Olympic rowing legend Steve Redgrave.
