Hard throwers evolved a long time ago

Contested study traces slingshot shoulders to 2-million-year-old ancestor

College baseball players and other athletes hurled baseballs to provide scientists with data suggesting, in a controversial analysis, that humanlike throwing abilities evolved around 2 million years ago.

Upper bodies that could throw objects at high speeds appeared for the first time in a human ancestor known as Homo erectus, say biological anthropologist Neil Roach of George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and his colleagues. Nearly 2 million years ago, H. erectus hunters exploited their slingshot shoulders to throw rocks or wooden spears at animal prey, Roach?s team reports in the June 27 Nature. But at least one critic argues that skeletal changes behind modern humans? throwing ability didn?t show up until much later.

However human throwing evolved, chimps got the heave-ho. ?Adult male chimps are incredibly strong but can only throw about 20 miles per hour, one-third the speed of a 12-year-old Little League pitcher,? Roach says.

To uncover the inner workings of Homo sapiens? ability to fling fastballs, Roach and his colleagues used a 3-D camera system to record the movements of 16 college baseball players and three athletes in other sports as they hurled baseballs, sometimes while wearing motion-limiting braces. Computerized analysis of each participant?s throwing motions indicated that energy storage and release enabled the shoulder to act much like a slingshot during fast throws.

Three anatomical traits characteristic of hard throwers today combined for the first time in H. erectus, the scientists propose. Expanded waists made the torso more flexible, realigned elbows increased energy storage in the dominant arm?s shoulder while cocking the arm, and broad shoulders boosted the power of shoulder and chest muscles.

Anatomist and fossil researcher Susan Larson of Stony Brook University in New York disagrees with that assessment. No tendons for energy storage are available at the shoulder, so human throwing probably doesn?t work as proposed in the new paper, Larson says.

In addition, H. erectus and two other early hominids ? 4.4-million-year-old Ardipithecus ramidus in eastern Africa and almost 2-million-year-old Australopithecus sediba in southern Africa ? had similarly aligned elbows in both arms, not in one throwing arm as observed in humans, Larson says.

Ancient eastern and southern African hominids had relatively short collarbones, suggestive of narrow shoulders unsuitable for flinging objects fast, she says. Larson regards estimates of longer collarbones in H. erectus, based on partial fossils recovered in western Asia, as unreliable. Those estimates are a centerpiece of Roach and his colleagues? reconstruction of how throwing evolved, making the issue of when longer collarbones arose in the human lineage a central one.

Elongated collarbones and broad shoulders first appeared, Larson says, not in Homo erectus but in a European hominid ? dubbed Homo antecessor by some researchers and Homo heidelbergensis by others ? roughly 1 million years ago.

SKorea says several gov't, private websites hacked

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea said multiple government and private sector websites were hacked on Tuesday's anniversary of the start of the Korean War, and Seoul issued a cyberattack alert warning officials and citizens to take security measures.

Government websites, including the one for the presidential Blue House, and some media servers were attacked, according to a statement from the science ministry. The statement said the sites were hacked and that a team was investigating.

The government alert is meant to warn officials and citizens of possible cyberattacks and urge them to enhance their server and computer security measures.

The shutdown happened on the 63rd anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War. It wasn't immediately clear who was responsible, but both Koreas have traded accusations of cyberattacks in recent years.

South Korean officials say that North Korea orchestrated a cyberattack in March that shut down tens of thousands of computers and servers at South Korean broadcasters and banks. Seoul said in April that an initial investigation pointed to a North Korean military-run spy agency as the culprit.

North Korea in recent weeks has pushed for diplomatic talks with Washington. But tensions ran high on the Korean Peninsula in March and April, with North Korea delivering regular threats over U.N. sanctions and U.S.-South Korean military drills.

Investigators detected similarities between the March cyberattack and past hacking attributed to the North Korean spy agency, including the recycling of 30 previously used malware programs ? out of a total of 76 used in the attack, South Korea's internet security agency said.

The March 20 cyberattack struck 48,000 computers and servers, hampering banks for two to five days. Officials have said that no bank records or personal data were compromised. Staffers at TV broadcasters KBS, MBC and YTN were unable to log on to news systems for several days, although programming continued during that period. No government, military or infrastructure targets were affected.

South Korea's National Intelligence Service said North Korea was behind a denial of service attack in 2009 that crippled dozens of websites, including that of the presidential office. Seoul also believes the North was responsible for cyberattacks on servers of Nonghyup bank in 2011 and Joongang Ilbo, a national daily newspaper, in 2012.

North Korea also blamed South Korea and the United States for cyberattacks in March that temporarily disabled Internet access and websites in North Korea, where a small number of people can go online.

Experts believe North Korea trains large teams of cyber warriors and that the South and its allies should be prepared against possible attacks on key infrastructure and military systems. If the inter-Korean conflict were to move into cyberspace, South Korea's deeply wired society would have more to lose than North Korea's, which largely remains offline.

Respawn Entertainment talks Xbox Live Cloud, praises its multiplayer servers

Microsoft's been quick to point out how it's beefing up the Xbox Live Cloud in preparation for its next wunderconsole, and now Respawn Entertainment is stepping in to detail just what Redmond's architecture means for multiplayer on Titanfall. The firm's Jon Shiring, who works with the game's cloud computing integration, says that the next-gen title boasts vastly improved online play since it leans on Ballmer and Company's cloud hardware instead of users to host sessions. By taking advantage of Microsoft's servers, the futuristic shooter benefits from more reliable bandwidth, snappier matchmaking times, extra CPU power and the elimination of latency-based host advantage and hacked-host cheating, to boot. Naturally, using dedicated servers can cost a ton, but Respawn says Microsoft managed to keep things comparatively inexpensive for developers, in part thanks to its Azure tech. For the dev's comprehensive write-up on just what this revamped Xbox Live architecture may mean for gaming, click the source link below.

NetNewsWire 4 enters open beta, gives Mac owners a new, local RSS reader option

As Google Reader's closing in on the end of its days, a spate of new RSS aggregators have popped up to replace it. Sure, web-based readers from AOL, Digg or Feedly could do the trick, but what if you want your RSS stored locally? You're in luck, because one of the elder statesmen in the RSS world, NetNewsWire, has what you need with its version 4 open beta. This new beta is a more refined version of NetNewsWire 4 Lite, which was released in 2011, and will allow folks to pull down all their GReader archives and store them locally for free while it's in beta. The catch? You've gotta be running Mac OS X 10.7.3 or later, and while the beta's free for now, the software will cost you once it's final -- $10 dollars for those who pre-order, and $20 after that.

Overview

It was bound to happen. When the Zombie-Alien-Demon-Vampire Apocalypse erupted, your family was prepared for the worst. What you didn?t count on, ironically, was your neighborhood. The biggest threat is not the giant undead half-demon munching on your grandmother. Rather, it?s your neighbors who are quietly spying on you from behind closed curtains. This game is all about the survival of the fittest in the suburbs. Lock, load, and live!

Bad Neighbors, designed by?Michael Peterson and?Sunday Williams and published by?Cuddle Manor, is comprised of 20 Monster cards, 16 Weapon cards, 8 Action cards, and 26 Family Member cards, and 1 blank Family Member card for you to customize. The artwork on the cards visibly nods and pays homage to various Pop and Geek Culture characters. For example, ?Creepy School Girl? is based on of?Samara Morgan from the horror movie? The Ring (or?Sadako from?Ringu, if you want to be technically correct), ?Junior? the zombie baby from the movie Braindead?(later retitled?Dead-Alive), and even?Edward from the?Twilight movie series. But not only movies are represented. Video game references and D&D references abound, too. And while the illustrations on the cards are very well done, they are not altogether ?family friendly?. Parents are highly encouraged to take a look at the game before putting it in front of their children. For example, here are three of the most disturbing cards, according to our Parent Geeks. We?ll leave it up to you to determine if they are appropriate or not, but to be fair, the game designers did tell us that they didn?t think the game was meant for younger Child Geeks.

badneighbors_artexample

Game Set Up

To set up the game, first separate the cards into two different decks. The backs of the cards are different for each deck, making this step an easy exercise. When completed, there should now be two different decks. The first, and the largest, will be comprised of Monster, Weapons, and Action cards. The back of this deck shows the title of the game. The second deck will be comprised of Family Member cards. The back of this deck shows a headstone.

Second, deal out to each player 4 Family Members cards. There is no need to shuffle this deck prior to doing so. The Family Member cards are placed face-up in front of their owning players in a single row. Place any unused Family Member cards aside as they are not used for the duration of the game.

Third, shuffle the other deck and deal out to each player 4 cards. Players should keep these cards hidden from their opponents at all times. Place the remaining deck face-down in the middle of the playing area and leave room for a discard pile beside it. This deck is now referred to as the ?draw deck?.

That?s it for game set up. Traditionally the player with the ?Wade? Family Member card goes first. If ?Wade? is not present, the first player should be the player directly to the left of the dealer.

There Goes the Neighborhood

The game is played in turns with no set number of turns per game. A player?s turn is summarized here.

Step 1: Play a Card?or Don?t

The player could have up to 3 different card types in their hand. These are Monster, Weapon, and Action cards. Monster cards represent four different groups (or suits) of nasties. These are Vampires, Zombies, Aliens, and Demons. Each group has an icon that identifies its ?suit?. If a player has a Monster card, they must play it to the table if there is at least one opponent who can be attacked by it. And by ?attacked?, I mean the opponent?s Family Members have no visible way of defending themselves. When playing a Monster card, the player places it next to the opponent they are attacking.

At this point, the opponent can now block the attack by playing a Weapon card from their hand. Each Weapon card has an image of one of the four suits, but with an ?X? through it, signifying it cancels that specific suit. If the opponent has a Weapon card that cancels the Monster card, they play it from their hand now and place it on one of their Family Member cards that DO NOT have a Weapon card already attached. Optionally, the opponent could play a Weapon card on a Family Member who already has a Weapon card. If they do, the new Weapon card replaces the old, sending the other Weapon card to the discard pile. The Monster card is then discarded and the player goes to step 2.

badneighbors_defense

If the opponent does not have a Weapon card that can cancel the Monster card attack, the opponent selects one of their Family Members (preferably one that does not have a weapon) and flips it over to the other side to show ?the headstone (signifying the Family Member is now 6 feet under). If the Family Member that is selected by the opponent has a Weapon card attached, the Weapon card is placed in the discard pile when the Family Member card is flipped over. Regardless of the outcome, the Monster card is placed in the discard pile and the player goes to step 2.

badneighbors_dead

If a player does not have a Monster card, they can play an Action card if they like or simply discard any one card from their hand. If the player plays an Action card, they read it out loud to the table and the effects of the Action card are resolved. Some of the Action cards depend a great deal on timing. For example, a few can only be played as reactions towards other attacks and one Action card, ?Pet Cemetery?, is only useful when the player has at least 1 Family Member who has died.

Step 2: Draw Cards

The player now draws back up to 4 cards taking as many cards as necessary from the top of the draw deck. If there are no more cards in the draw deck, shuffle the discard pile and create a new draw deck.

This completes the player?s turn. The next player going clockwise now goes.

Survival and Victory

The game continues as described above until one of the two following victory conditions are met.

  • The first player to play 1 Weapon card from each of the 4 suits wins the game. Note that a player can only place a Weapon card on a Family Member card when they are attacked by the specific Monster type the Weapon card counters. Additionally, a Family Member can only have 1 Weapon card attached to them at a time. If a Family Member is ever stolen by an opponent, the Weapon card goes with them.
  • The last player with living Family Members wins the game.

Prediction

I?ll be the first to suggest that there isn?t much to?Bad Neighbors, but I don?t think for a moment it was ever intending to be anything other than a fast and silly card game. The artwork on a number of the cards makes it impossible for me to share it with my own Child Geeks, however, and I am fairly certain the other Parent Geeks I will be playing the game with will feel the same way. The Zombies are horrific and there is a naked big breasted, one-eyed she-demon that is strangely alluring in a creepy kind of way. Most of the time, I?d just remove the offending cards, but in the case of?Bad Neighbors, doing so would actually break the game.

Going forward with the assumption that the Child Geeks will not be enjoying this game at the gaming table anytime soon, that leaves us with only the Parent Geeks and the Gamer Geeks to play?Bad Neighbors with.

For the Parent Geeks, I think this game is going to be a solid hit or a dreadful miss. The game depends a great deal on the player having a sense of humor and being ?in the know? when it comes to Pop and Geek Culture. If the Parent Geeks we play the game with are not amused by the game, it will fail. If the Parent Geek is amused and gets a few smiles, they might warm up to it. Ultimately, it?s the mood at the gaming table that is going to determine if the game is worthwhile. If the majority of players aren?t having a good time, they?ll blame it on the game?and me.

I think the Gamer Geeks are going to dislike this game vehemently and their level of criticism will be palatable. There is nothing to suggest in the rules that the game play will appeal to the Gamer Geeks. So strongly do I believe this that I am considering not sharing?Bad Neighbors with the Gamer Geeks at all. I don?t want to waste the Gamer Geeks? time, nor did I want to throw the game under the proverbial bus. But you know I?m going to anyway. A review is worthless if you don?t test the game in front of different groups.

Teaching and learning how to play?Bad Neighbors?will not take anyone long. In fact, the summarized rules of play are printed on the sides of the card box. What is detailed there is pretty much all you need to know in two steps. The most frequent question I was asked after going through the game rules was, ?Is that It??

I, for one, am very curious to see how this is going to play out?

Final Word

As predicted, none of the Parent Geeks wanted to share the game with their children. For this review, we cannot suggest that?Bad Neighbors is or is not appropriate for your children or even if Child Geeks would enjoy the game. We?ll leave it up to you, the Parent Geeks, to reach your own conclusions.

For the Parent Geeks, it went down exactly as I predicted. If the Parent Geek was amused by the illustrations and the sometimes not-to-subtle Geek Culture references, they thought the card game was funny. For those Parent Geeks who didn?t, they spent most of the time wondering why some of their peers were laughing. All the Parent Geeks thought the game was ?OK? at best, and for some Parent Geeks, that was a stretch. According to one Parent Geek who wanted to be quoted, ?This is obviously a game that was created by someone who loved their own idea and this is the result.? I believe they were suggesting that?Bad Neighbors is a product of passion, where the game designers created a game they wanted to play and enjoy with their friends. If such is the case, I totally agree with the Parent Geek. In the end, the overall endorsement for the game was very mixed. Some thought it would be good for light game nights with their peers and some thought the game would make for a good chew toy for their pets.

Also, as predicted, the Gamer Geeks tore?Bad Neighbors a new one. Oh, lordy, how they disliked it. I was constantly asked why I bothered to put the game in front of them and the colorful words of criticism spilled out from the group from start to finish. Some of the Gamer Geeks even cheered on some of their peers to ?quickly end the game so we can play something else?. I encouraged them to keep the game in perspective and just play it for what it was. When we were done, none of the Gamer Geeks thought highly of the game. Pretty sure they started to think less of me, too. According to one Gamer Geek, ?Bad Neighbors? More like Bad Game, if you ask me.? Another Gamer Geek summed up his opinion on the game by simply saying, ?Sucks?. And finally, another Gamer Geek said, ?Awful. The only thing I liked about it was that a card used my name.? Ouch. Clearly,?Bad Neighbors left a very bitter taste in the Gamer Geeks? collective mouths. When the game was picked up and put away, everyone agreed never to speak of?Bad Neighbors again except in a context that somehow belittled me.

Any "joy" you are seeing is being forced upon them because I told them to "smile" for the camera

The ?joy? you see is fake ? I told them to ?smile? for the camera ? one Gamer Geek ignored me

Bad Neighbors is most certainly going to be a niche game. I was unable to observe any game play that would suggest that Bad Neighbors?would have broad appeal in the general sense. It?s downright brave to introduce such a game to other players who know nothing of the game?s history. Especially when the game in question has most likely been tailored to a specific group. I commend the game designers for passing us their game and letting others play it. By doing so, they opened it up to harsh criticism, which it received in abundance.

Personally, I don?t care for the game. I find it to be too light and repetitive. The meaningful actions I can take are exceedingly small in number and there is nothing in the way of strategy to be had. It?s a game I could play half-awake and that does not appeal to me. The games I enjoy are far more complex, deep in game play, and leave me feeling like I worked for a victory.?Bad Neighbors leaves me with none of this. It?s not the type of game I would seek out or wish to play when there is so much else out there. If the game was appropriate for my little geeks, I?d be singing a different tune. Playing games this light is only fun when I can play with my kids. As it is now, I can only play it with sarcastic passive-aggressive Gamer Geeks and highly unamused Parent Geeks.

For every player there is a game, and for every game there is a player. I was unable to find a solid match, but perhaps you can. If the game?s theme and easy play appeals to you, I encourage you to look into it. It could just be the perfect ?light card game filler? you?ve been looking for.

This game was given to Father Geek as a review copy. Father Geek was not paid, bribed, wined, dined, or threatened in vain hopes of influencing this review. Such is the statuesque and legendary integrity of Father Geek.

Fish?hand Koehler his first win with late charge

By ANTONIO GONZALEZ

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:00 a.m. ET June 21, 2013

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Drenched in all kinds of liquids poured out of a beat-up bucket that teammates conjured up in the clubhouse, Tom Koehler never felt better as a major league pitcher.

Pinch hitter Marcell Ozuna's two-run single gave Koehler his first victory in nine career starts, and the Miami Marlins rallied past the San Francisco Giants 2-1 Thursday night.

"I smell like a bar," Koehler said. "Other than the day I met my wife, this is probably the happiest moment of my life. Definitely the happiest baseball moment."

In his first career pinch-hit appearance, Ozuna's line drive to right field in the eighth inning off reliever Jeremy Affeldt (1-3) ended Koehler's run of futility. After six appearances in the bullpen, Koehler (1-5) had been winless in seven starts this season - and took the loss in his lone start last year - for the worst team in the majors.

He hugged Ozuna in the dugout following the hit that flipped the score. Koehler also had the game ball in his locker - soon to be resting on the mantle in his "man cave" back home, he said - that Steve Cishek handed to him after recording his 11th save in the ninth.

The right-hander's victory ended the third-longest winless streak to start a career in Marlins history, behind Marc Valdez's nine-start stretch from 1995-96 and Kevin Olsen's 12-start streak from 2001-02, according to STATS.

"It definitely didn't weigh on my confidence, but to say I didn't think about it would be a lie," Koehler said. "Every time I went out there I wanted to win the game. I was wondering what it would take to do it."

Giants starter Chad Gaudin tossed 4 1-3 scoreless innings, but he left the game after taking a hard line drive off his right throwing elbow. The team said he had a bruised elbow.

Far more concerning for the Giants was the status of center fielder Angel Pagan, who was on a rehab assignment with Class-A San Jose. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Pagan injured his leg running to first base and was carted off the field. Bochy said more information on Pagan's injury would come Friday.

One of the few good moments for San Francisco came when Joaquin Arias extended his hitting streak to 11 games with an RBI triple in the seventh.

Koehler kept the Giants off the scoreboard otherwise. He didn't even allow a hit until Gregor Blanco's one-out single in the sixth. He struck out three, walked three and allowed three hits.

"He was really happy," Ozuna said.

San Francisco seems to be hounded by unfortunate injuries of late.

Gaudin took a line drive from Derek Dietrich off his elbow, fielded the ball and threw him out for the first out of the fifth inning. Gaudin grimaced as he paced around the mound, then he took a couple practice pitches before coming out.

Gaudin gave up two hits and two walks while striking out one. He was making just his fourth start of the season since entering the rotation for the injured Ryan Vogelsong.

"It didn't hit bone at all, just muscle," Gaudin said. "It's a little sore but there are no breaks or anything. It hurt. It hit square on top of the elbow. It's frustrating but something I can't control. I'll just deal with it."

It also was the second straight game the Marlins had taken out an opposing pitcher. Arizona's Trevor Cahill left in the first inning after a line drive from Ozuna bruised his right hip in Miami's 3-1 loss Wednesday.

The only blemish on Koehler's first victory came when Belt hit a two-out double in the seventh, sliding in safely when right fielder Giancarlo Stanton's throw sailed wide. Arias followed with an RBI triple in the right-center field gap.

Sandy Rosario was taken out after 2 1-3 innings when he walked Justin Ruggiano leading off the eighth. Ozuna later lined a two-out, two-run single to right on an 0-2 count against Affeldt to give the Marlins the lead.

The rookie had never pinch hit in the majors before.

"He's a pretty good pinch hitter," Marlins manager Mike Redmond quipped.

NOTES: The Marlins have won eight in a row at AT&T Park since July 28, 2010. ... Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval, on the disabled list since June 9 with a strained left foot, will join Class-A San Jose on a rehab assignment Friday - a day earlier than originally expected. He will likely join the Giants in Los Angeles on Monday. ... The Giants announced that Joseph Zito, the father of pitcher Barry Zito, died Wednesday in Van Nuys, Calif., at age 84. The cause of death was not disclosed. Zito, who said in a statement his father's death "has presented me with a difficulty I could not predict," was the first pitcher on the field for batting practice Thursday. (AP) ? About a third of women worldwide have been physically or sexually assaulted by a former or current partner, according to the first major review of violence against women.

In a series of papers released on Thursday by the World Health Organization and others, experts estimated nearly 40 percent of women killed worldwide were slain by an intimate partner and that being assaulted by a partner was the most common kind of violence experienced by women.

"Violence against women is a global health problem of epidemic proportions," WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan said in a statement.

WHO defined physical violence as being slapped, pushed, punched, choked or being attacked with a weapon. Sexual violence was defined as being physically forced to have sex, having sex because you were afraid of what your partner might do and being compelled to do something sexual that was humiliating or degrading.

The report also examined rates of sexual violence against women by someone other than a partner and found about 7 percent of women worldwide had previously been a victim.

In conjunction with the report, WHO issued guidelines for authorities to spot problems earlier and said all health workers should be trained to recognize when women may be at risk and how to respond appropriately.

Globally, the WHO review found 30 percent of women are affected by domestic or sexual violence by a partner. The report was based largely on studies from 1983 to 2010. According to the United Nations, more than 600 million women live in countries where domestic violence is not considered a crime.

The rate of domestic violence against women was highest in Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, where 37 percent of women experienced physical or sexual violence from a partner at some point in their lifetime. The rate was 30 percent in Latin and South America and 23 percent in North America. In Europe and Asia, it was 25 percent.

Some experts said screening for domestic violence should be added to all levels of health care, such as obstetric clinics.

"It's unlikely that someone would walk into an ER and disclose they've been assaulted," said Sheila Sprague of McMaster University in Canada, who has researched domestic violence in women at orthopedic clinics. She was not connected to the WHO report.

"Over time, if women are coming into a fracture clinic or a pre-natal clinic, they may tell you they are suffering abuse if you ask," she said.

For domestic violence figures, scientists analyzed information from 86 countries focusing on women over the age of 15. They also assessed studies from 56 countries on sexual violence by someone other than a partner, though they had no data from the Middle East. WHO experts then used modeling techniques to fill in the gaps and to come up with global estimates for the percentage of women who are victims of violence.

In a related paper published online in the journal Lancet, researchers found more than 38 percent of slain women are killed by a former or current partner, six times higher than the rate of men killed by their partners. Heidi Stoeckl, one of the authors at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said the figures were likely to be an underestimate. She and colleagues found that globally, a woman's highest risk of murder was from a current or ex-partner.

In countries like India, Stoeckl said things like "honor killings," where women are sometimes murdered over dowry disputes or perceived offenses like infidelity to protect the family's reputation, adds to the problem.

She also noted that women and men are often slain by their partners for different reasons.

"When a woman kills her male partner, it's usually out of self-defense because she has been abused," she said. "But when a woman is killed, it's often after she has left the relationship and the man is killing her out of jealousy or rage."

Stoeckl said criminal justice authorities should intervene at an earlier stage.

"When a woman is killed by a partner, she has often already had contact with the police," she said.

Stoeckl said more protective measures should be in place for women from their partners, particularly when he or she has a history of violence and owns a gun.

"There are enough signs that we should be watching out for that," she said. "We certainly should know if someone is potentially lethal and be able to do something about it."

Pay for play: Judge set to hear case that could transform college sports

Forward Ed O''Bannon of the UCLA Bruins moves the ball during a game against the USC Trojans.

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News

A federal judge in California will hear arguments Thursday on whether thousands of current and former athletes can join a lawsuit that could upend the multi-billion-dollar business of college sports.

Ed O?Bannon, a power forward for the UCLA basketball team in the mid-1990s, is among those suing to force the NCAA to share the revenue from its lucrative television and video-game contracts with players ? perhaps as much as 50-50.

The judge, Claudia Wilken of U.S. District Court, will hear arguments on whether the lawsuit deserves class-action status. If she rules that it does, tens of thousands of student-athletes, past and present, could join up.

If that happens, legal observers have said, the NCAA might pursue a settlement and set up a fund to pay current and former players. Or it could take the case to a jury trial next year, exposing it to billions of dollars in potential liability.

Michael McCann, director of the Sports and Entertainment Law Institute at the University of New Hampshire School of Law, told NBC News that the stakes for the NCAA are huge.

?It would be changing college sports from a model where players have been limited in terms of compensation ? room and board and tuition ? to something much bigger than that,? he said.

Potential payment for athletes would have a flip side, he said ? less revenue for the NCAA, its conferences and schools themselves, potentially forcing them to rethink scholarships and budgets for all their sports.

Student-athletes in major college sports are unpaid and sign an agreement that grants the NCAA the right to use their likenesses for commercial purposes. O?Bannon?s suit argues in part that the setup unfairly stops players from selling the rights themselves.

The NCAA says it?s defending the principles of amateur sports.

?The NCAA is not exploiting current or former student-athletes but instead provides enormous benefit to them and to the public,? it said in a statement in March. ?This case has always been wrong ? wrong on the facts and wrong on the law.?

The original suit, filed in 2009, focused on the use of player likenesses in EA Sports video games. The judge in January allowed the plaintiffs to pursue a cut of the television money, too.

That expanded the case dramatically. For the rights to televise its March Madness basketball tournament alone, CBS Sports and Turner Broadcasting will pay the NCAA almost $11 billion from 2011 through 2024. The NCAA also receives huge payments for college football broadcasting rights.

The NCAA has said that the plaintiffs? suggestion that it reaps a ?financial bonanza? from TV deals is false, and that it doesn?t force anyone to sign away their likenesses.

?Individual student-athletes are free to participate or not,? the association said in a summary of its argument against class-action status. ?If they do choose to participate in the broadcast, they consent, just as the coaches, cheerleaders, band members, and referees do.?

O?Bannon?s cause has attracted high-profile backers, including NBA legends Oscar Robertson and Bill Russell, who were collegiate standouts before their pro success. Former Nebraska and Arizona State quarterback Sam Keller is the original plaintiff.

McCann, who wrote a lengthy primer on the case for the website of Sports Illustrated, has compared O'Bannon to Curt Flood, who four decades ago challenged Major League Baseball?s reserve clause, which tied players to their teams for life.

Flood lost his case at the Supreme Court in 1972, but he was vindicated three years later, when an arbitrator?s ruling paved the way for the modern system of free agency, changing the sport forever and enabling today?s mega-million contracts.

?It takes courage, regardless of the merits of their claim, to take on a system, an institution,? McCann said.

O?Bannon, who now works at a Toyota dealership outside Las Vegas, did not immediately return a call Thursday from NBC News. He told The Associated Press earlier this year that he filed the suit because the system wasn?t working.

?Everybody?s getting paid except the players,? he said. ?It?s not fair, and it needs to change.?

How To Make Museums More Inviting For Kids With Autism

Dylan Murphy, 3, plays with a swan at the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia. It was his first trip to a museum that didn't overwhelm him.

Last January, Noelle Murphy and her family were on their way to the Please Touch Museum for children in Philadelphia. Right before they arrived, 3-year-old Dylan had an accident.

"He wet himself," Murphy said, "And we were thinking, 'Oh no, how are we going to deal with this?' "

Dylan has autism, and his mom, Noelle, tends to choose at-home activities over unpredictable outings like a day at the museum. If Dylan becomes overwhelmed by his surroundings, he might yell loudly, or drop to the floor and refuse to get up. For Noelle, that's not out of the ordinary. But when strangers around them are added to the mix, it can make for an embarrassing scene.

But that day at the museum was different for the Murphys.

They took advantage of Play without Boundaries ? an hour of museum time for kids with special needs. No weirdness, no awkward explanations, just families with other families who understand the challenges of being in public with kids who are on the autism spectrum.

"When we got there, they had a pair of hospital scrubs in his size, they took his dirty pants and washed them," Murphy said. "It was an extremely different experience than what we are used to."

A study released Monday by the American Alliance of Museums finds more and more of these centers for learning and preservation are also places where health awareness is on display. The Please Touch Museum is one of over 30 museums in the U.S. that has responded to the special needs of visitors with autism.

"My first reaction in the car on the way home was to cry," Murphy said. "My husband asked why I was crying, and I said it was so nice to finally take him somewhere other kids go without having to worry about an unpleasant experience ... for us and those around us."

But it's not always easy to take a kid with autism out into the world, especially a museum. A recent tally found that 1 in 88 children in the U.S. is somewhere on the autism spectrum. For these youngsters, if a place doesn't have appropriate accommodations, museum-going is a no-go for much of their childhood. That's because so often, what seems like a fun diversion ends up causing feelings of anxiety and sometimes panic.

That's why some museums have made special accommodations. "During those hours the museum looks different," said Leslie Walker, Please Touch Museum's vice president for community learning.

Flashing lights are dimmed, and booming music is turned down. Kids who want a sense of security about their visit are encouraged to create custom schedules and maps beforehand. And museum employees who will teach kids about the exhibits go through sensitivity training to learn what needs a child with autism might have to interact like their peers.

"They know now to bend down and get on that kid's level, and to wait awhile before following up if they ask a question," Walker said.

At museums that acknowledge not every kid craves raucous, stimulating sights to have a good time, parents of children with autism find public places where they can be themselves. And they don't have to miss out on experiencing another childhood pastime with their kids, like getting lost in a museum.

Pretty Soon Your Vanilla Flavoring Will Come From... Sawdust

It's not uncommon to hear bibliophiles and pedants waxing poetic about the wonderful and incomparable "old book smell," but tiresome as these tirades may be, it turns out they might actually be on to something. Thanks to a recent scientific study, that same, vanilla-tinged aroma wafting off the pages of old tomes is now the most efficient way to flavor our ice cream.

Iran's Ahmadinejad meets president-elect

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has met his newly elected successor Hasan Rowhani.

A Tuesday report by the official IRNA news agency said Ahmadinejad congratulated Rowhani for his Friday victory in the election. The meeting was aimed at "coordination" between the two.

Rowhani, who won the election in the first round by taking nearly 51 percent of votes, said the country can promote welfare and global progress by "respecting differences."

Under the law Ahmadinejad was not able to run for a third consecutive term.

Rowhani has vowed for better ties with the world, and aims to reduce the West's sanctions against Iran over the country's disputed nuclear program.

The West suspects Iran intends to use the program to build a weapon. Iran denies the charge.

Ex-South Africa ambassador criticizes Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) ? The recently retired South African ambassador to Israel has taken a parting shot at the country's treatment of Palestinians, calling it a "replication of apartheid."

Ismail Coovadia made the statement in a letter to pro-Palestinian activists.

In it, Coovadia explained his decision to reject a symbolic gift from the Israeli government ? planting trees in his honor in a national park named after South Africa.

He said Israeli policies that discriminate against Palestinians appeared to be reminiscent of his experiences under South Africa's apartheid system. South Africa's post-apartheid government frequently identifies with the Palestinians.

Coovadia, who completed his four-year term in January, confirmed the letter's contents on Tuesday.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said Coovadia did not made such complaints during his term. Israel routinely rejects the apartheid comparison.
