Phelps swims into history with 19th Olympic medal

LONDON (AP) ? Michael Phelps lingered on the blocks, not wanting to make another shocking blunder. The 19th medal was his. All he had to do was avoid a DQ, then set off on what amounted to four victory laps.

Down and back, then down and back again, the roars getting louder with each stroke.

When Phelps touched the wall, he finally had gold at his final Olympics.

And a record for the ages.

Phelps swam into history with a lot of help from his friends, taking down the last major record that wasn't his alone. He took the anchor leg for the United States in a gold medal-winning performance of the 4x200-meter freestyle relay Tuesday night, earning the 19th Olympic medal of his brilliant career, and the 15th gold.

A more appropriate color.

"I've put my mind to doing something that nobody had ever done before," Phelps said. "This has been an amazing ride."

About an hour earlier, Phelps took one of his most frustrating defeats at the pool, blowing it at the finish and settling for silver in his signature event, the 200 butterfly.

That tied the record for career medals held by Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, but it was hardly a triumphant moment. Phelps slung away his cap in disgust and struggled to force a smile at the medal ceremony.

But any disappointment from that race was gone by the time he dived in the water on the relay, having been staked to a huge lead by teammates Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer and Ricky Berens.

Before the race, they all huddled together, fully aware of their role in history.

"I thanked those guys for helping me get to this moment," Phelps said. "I told those guys I wanted a big lead. I was like, 'You better give me a big lead going into the last lap,' and they gave it to me. I just wanted to hold on. I thanked them for being able to allow me to have this moment."

Berens handed off a lead of nearly 4 seconds to Phelps, who was extra cautious with the exchange, knowing the only way he could ruin this one was to get disqualified.

Lochte stood on the deck, waving his arms. Dwyer and Berens pumped their fists. And Phelps touched the wall for his first gold of the London Games with a cumulative time of 6 minutes, 59.70 seconds.

No one else was close. France's Yannick Agnel swam a faster final leg than Phelps, but it wasn't nearly good enough, his country taking silver in 7:02.77. China was far back in third at 7:06.30.

Phelps might have backed into the record a bit by failing to win any of his first three events at these games, but there's no denying his legacy as one of the greatest Olympians ever ? if not THE greatest.

"The legacy he has left behind for swimming is fantastic," said South African Chad le Clos, the guy who beat him in the butterfly. "Even in Africa, everyone knows Michael Phelps."

Phelps has 15 golds in his career, six more than anyone else, to go along with two silvers and two bronzes. After failing to medal in his only race at the 2000 Sydney Games, he won six golds and two bronzes in Athens, followed by his epic eight gold medals in Beijing. And now the swan song, not nearly as epic but enough.

Latynina won nine golds, five silvers and four bronzes from 1956-64.

"You are now a complete legend!" the public-address announcer bellowed, accompanied by the Foo Fighters' song "Best of You."

Phelps still has three more events in London before he retires, three more chances to establish a mark that will be hard for anyone to touch.

"It has been a pretty amazing career," the 27-year-old said, "but we still have a couple races to go."

Several fans held up a bedsheet with "PHELPS GREATEST OLYMPIAN EVER" handwritten on it.

Hard to argue with that, though this hasn't exactly been the farewell Phelps was hoping for ? a sluggish fourth-place finish in the 400 individual medley, a runner-up showing in the 4x100 free relay, then another silver in the 200 fly.

The 200 fly was a race he had not lost at either the Olympics or world championships since Sydney, when he finished fifth as an unknown 15-year-old just soaking up the moment, a kid with big dreams but no idea they would turn out like this.

Phelps, after leading the entire race, tried to glide into the wall instead of taking one more stroke. Le Clos took that extra stroke and beat Phelps by five-hundredths of a second.

"Obviously I would have liked to have a better outcome in the 200 fly," Phelps said. "I was on the receiving end of getting touched out. Chad swam a good race. I've gotten to know him a little over the last year. He's a hard worker, he's a tough competitor and he's a racer."

Le Clos pounded the water when he saw the "1'' beside his name.

"He has always been an inspiration to me and a role model," le Clos said. "I've watched all his races a million times and I've run the commentary over and over. Now, I guess I can watch my race."

Phelps hung on the lane rope and buried his face in his hands, disgusted with himself for having squandered what looked like a sure gold. Le Clos won South Africa's second swimming gold of the games in a time of 1:52.96. Phelps finished in 1:53.01, while Japan's Takeshi Matsuda took the bronze in 1:53.21.

"It's obviously my last one," Phelps said. "I would have liked to win, but 1:53 flat isn't a terrible time. When you look at the picture of it, it's a decent time."

But the finish was a stunner, given that Phelps had won a memorable race at Beijing when a rival made the very same error. Milorad Cavic of Serbia thought he had the 100 fly in the bag after his final stroke, but Phelps made the split-second decision to get in one more stroke and slammed into the wall ? one-hundredth of a second ahead of Cavic.

This time, it was Phelps on the losing end. He was again denied a chance to become the first male swimmer to win the same individual event at three straight Olympics, though he can still do it in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly.

Lochte was also feeling better about himself, having struggled in two straight events after opening the Olympics with a dominating win in the 400 individual medley. He swam the anchor of the 4x100 free relay, but was chased down by Agnel after being handed a comfortable lead. Then he was fourth ? far behind Agnel ? in the 200 free.

"After that relay, my confidence went down," Lochte said. "Everyone just kept on telling me, 'You know what, you're better than that. Just forget about it and move on.' I didn't swim at all this morning, which I thought helped. I woke up this morning and I was back to myself. I was that happy-go-lucky guy, so I think that's what really helped me throughout the whole day."

In the first final of the night, American Allison Schmitt won the 200 freestyle with a dominating performance that left everyone else, including teammate Missy Franklin, battling for the other medals.

Schmitt won in an Olympic-record 1:53.61. France's Camille Muffat took silver in 1:55.58, almost a body length behind, while Bronte Barrett of Australia took the bronze over Franklin by a hundredth of a second. Barrett touched in 1:55.81. Franklin, who led after the first 50, was fourth in 1:55.82.

"I was just racing," said Schmitt, who is quietly becoming one of the stars of the pool. "I knew I had to kick it. I just look at that scoreboard and see 53 and first place. I couldn't be happier."

She captured her first career gold medal, to go along with a silver in the 400 free and a bronze in the 4x100 free relay.

The 17-year-old Franklin was denied her third medal of the games, one night after her gutsy victory in the 100 backstroke earned her a tweet-out from pop star Justin Bieber.

"I was trying to do the best that I can," said Franklin, who still has four more events in London. "I was in an incredible heat. I really wanted to go best time."

China's Ye Shiwen set an Olympic record to win her second gold of the London Games, adding the 200 individual medley title to a world-record performance in the 400 IM that sparked suspicions about doping. Everyone from her fellow swimmers to the International Olympic Committee have come to her defense, and she put aside any distractions to win again.

The questions didn't stop. The teenager was peppered with drug-related queries at her news conference, including a reporter asking her point-black if she had ever used banned substances.

"Absolutely not," Ye said through a translator.

The 16-year-old took the lead in the final lap and clocked 2:07.57, shaving 0.18 off her own mark set in Monday's semifinal. Alicia Coutts of Australia touched in 2:08.15 to take the silver medal and Caitlin Leverenz of the United States finished in 2:08.95 to take bronze.

Defending champion Stephanie Rice of Australia was fourth.

But this night was all about Phelps, who endured both gut-wrenching disappointment and thrilling triumph.

After losing the 200 fly, he retrieved his cap, went over to congratulate le Clos, and hustled out of the pool to get ready for the relay. Before that, Phelps had to return to the deck for a medal ceremony that he clearly would have preferred to skip. He bit his lip, leaned over to have the silver medal draped around his neck, and forced a weak smile.

It sure didn't feel like a celebration.

But the mood was much different when he came out with his teammates to accept gold for the relay. He bantered playfully with the crowd. He posed with an American flag. He propped up a chair trying to reach his mom and two sisters, sitting in the front row.

As Phelps lingered on the deck, doing television interviews, a crowd of U.S. supporters broke into a chant.

"Four more years! Four more years!"

But, really, what's left for someone who's already the greatest?

christine's cottage garden home: Faith Family Friends sign

I've been making these wood signs lately and I decided to make myself one. Usually they are only 12 inches long but I wanted to make a longer one to go under a shelf in my office. I LOVE the way it turned out! I'll show you how I did it. SO EASY..
First, find yourself a piece of wood, mine is 6" x 40"
Any scrap piece will do, mine was from an old deck we took apart. Paint it black or white or whatever background color you would like. I did mine black and I only paint where the paper would not be.
Then find some pretty scrapbook paper and head to your computer. I used Word to print the words Faith Family and Friends. You might have to play around a little to get it just right, and remember to leave at least a?1 inch border. I also had to print each word on a seperate piece of paper.?

??

Then I used my favorite stamp and added black to the corners and around the edges.

I used mod podge to glue the paper down. Then I went to my favorite little machine - the Cricut! I cut?seven 3"curly shapes.
I added some black ink to the curly shapes to give?them more depth and then glued them in place
A sweet little silver heart glued between the words and I put upholstery tacks in the corners but the picture didn't show them very well

Since I wasn't going to hang it on the wall but off the bottom of the shelf, I used cup hooks and eye screws. I attached the hooks to the underneath of the shelf and the eyes to the top of my sign. A little tip - put a dab of toothpaste on the eyes and then touch it to the shelf, it leaves a mark exactly where you need to screw in the cup hooks.
This is the before...
And here's the after...
What do you think?

I LOVE it!

Chinese protest Communist propaganda in Hong Kong Schools

Obama Hu DarkTens of thousands of Hong Kong residents have joined a protest against a government plan for Chinese patriotism classes in local schools.

The protesters Sunday called on the government to drop the plan, which they fear will lead to the brainwashing of children with Communist propaganda.

Organizers said the march from the city's Victoria Park to the government headquarters drew 90,000 people, while police gave a lower estimate of 32,000.

Thousands of parents brought their children to the march, some pushing strollers with infants and others walking with students of elementary and high school age. The protesters also included many teachers and pro-democracy activists.

Hong Kong's government is encouraging elementary schools to adopt a new curriculum in September, with classes aimed at "building a sense of national pride and belonging toward China." It rejects protesters' complaints that the curriculum amounts to brainwashing.

This mass protest is the latest sign of growing public discontent with Beijing's interference in the former British colony. Britain returned Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty in 1997 under a Beijing promise for the territory to retain a high degree of autonomy.

More than 100,000 people joined an annual pro-democracy march on July 1, the highest turnout in eight years. Many of the protesters demanded the resignation of the city's new leader, Leung Chun-ying, who had taken office earlier that day after being selected by a committee comprised mostly of Beijing loyalists.

The city's deputy leader, Chief Secretary Carrie Lam, responded to Sunday's protest by announcing the formation of a committee to monitor the implementation of the patriotism classes. The government wants elementary schools to adopt the classes on a voluntary basis for a three-year trial period, before making them compulsory in 2015.

The new curriculum includes a teaching booklet called ?The China Model? that praises the one-party rule of the Chinese Communist Party and makes no mention of its deadly 1989 crackdown on protesters in and around Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

Romney visits Jerusalem's Western Wall

JERUSALEM - Mitt and Ann Romney visited one of the holiest sites in the Jewish faith today, arriving at the Western Wall on a sacred day of mourning in Israel.

The Romneys arrived via motorcade at the site of prayer and spent about 15 minutes walking to the wall and placing their prayers in the wall and got a warm reception.

The wall is split in two - one side for men and the other for women - so Ann and her female staffers approached one side, while the candidate approached the other with Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz.

There were hundreds of Jewish worshippers praying at the site on this holy fasting day of Tisha B'Av and cell phones were out snapping photos of Romney. Many chanted at him as he walked slowly toward the wall.

One man started clapping. "Good luck to you," he told Romney "God bless you." Another shouted, "Here comes the next president!" "He is for Israel!" shouted another.

Among those with Romney were son Josh, senior adviser Dan Senor and Spencer Zwick.

Romney stood for several minutes with a man who had diagrams and looked to be describing the wall and where on the Temple Mount Romney was standing. Romney then took a piece of paper and wrote something on it. He approached the wall, bowed his head and put his right hand on the wall. After about 20 seconds he looked up and stuck his note into a space on the wall.

One man shouted, "Beat Obama, governor.! Beat Obama." Another said, "Get rid of Obamacare."

"Mr. Romney, say hello to Georgia!" one man said.

Romney looked over his shoulder and waved. "Hello, Georgia."

The Wailing Wall, as the wall is also known as, is the outside wall that surrounded the second temple. Today is said to be the day that the Romans destroyed the Second Temple, leading to the Tisha B'Av

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney says that if he worried about what reporters thought of him, he wouldn't get much sleep.

He says he's sleeping just fine.

The U.S. presidential candidate tells CBS' "Face the Nation" that he isn't sweating the upcoming Newsweek magazine cover that leads with "Romney: The Wimp Factor."

He says the media tried a similar criticism of President George H.W. Bush. Romney says Bush "was a pretty great president" who was not a wimp.

A 1987 Newsweek profile featured a profile of then-Vice President Bush with the title ? "Fighting the 'Wimp Factor.'"

Asked whether he had ever been called wimp, Romney says the Newsweek cover is a first.

Romney is in Israel on an international trip set to introduce him on the world stage.

Arab American Literature | Morocco World News

By Jamal Saidi

Morocco World News

Casablanca, July 27, 2012

Arab American literature has developed over a century. The importance of this type of literature, I believe, lies in the very glaring fact that Arabs? experience has been at the core of focus of many nations, especially the United States. I shall therefore give an overview on the different stages which this ethnic literature underwent.

Arab American literary experience reflects a story of different waves of immigration. This ethnic literature moved from a period of nostalgia to embracing its ethnic roots to self-critique.

The first presence of Arabs in America dates back to the late 1800s. Most of the immigrants were mainly from the Ottoman provinces of Syria which also included Lebanon. They were identified as Turks because of their Ottoman citizenship; they preferred, however, to be classified as Syrians. They were all Christians, though from different sects: Greek Orthodox, Maronite and Melchite. Many of them worked as itinerant peddlers and shopkeepers due to their limited professional skills. They mostly settled in cities such as New York and Boston. The Naturalization Act of 1790 gave the right of citizenship to ?Free white persons?, a term which could fit to a certain type of Arab individuals. These facts influenced, to a great extent, the written literature of Arab Americans in that period.

This period in Arab American literature was characterized by nostalgia, though it marked an attempt to stress the similarities between Arabs and their predominant hosting society. The authors had an attitude of stressing the cultural features that were familiar within the American cultural context, whereas they tended to belittle those that were unusual to Americans. They often highlighted their Christian beliefs and their geographical origin, the ?Holy Land.? Shakir points out that, ?The first generation of Arab-Americans dressed carefully for their encounters with the American public, putting on the guise of prophet, preacher, or man of letters.?? Rihbani?s ?The Syrian Christ? (1916) mirrors this nostalgic tone as well as attempts to prove one?s worth to belong to American society:

I was born not far from where the Master was born, and

brought up under almost the identical conditions under which he

lived, I have an ?inside view? of the Bible which, by the nature of

things, a Westerner cannot have. And I know,? he continues, ?that the conditions of life in Syria to-day are essentially as they

were inthe time of Christ. . . . [W]henever I open my Bible it reads like a

letter from home (5).

Rihbani shows strong attachment to his homeland through idealizing Syria?s life style by comparing it to that of the time of Christ. Jesus becomes a means to gain others? sympathy and most importantly recognition. The author is seemingly attempting to satisfy his nostalgic needs but also to stress the belonging to the Christian community. He tries to convince ?a Westerner? that he has an ?inside view? which is needed and worthy of being accepted. He draws this legitimacy from being born near to ?Where the Master was born?.

?In the 1920s, a group of writers formed what was known as ?The Mahjar? and ? Arrabitta Alqalamiya.? They were represented in both South and North America. They invocated Western literary writers such as Emerson and Thoreau. It is even argued that they were influenced by Western Romanticism and American Transcendentalism. It can be viewed as an attempt to bridge the gap between Arab immigrants and Americans, East and the West.

With this in mind, Khalil Gibran?s ?The Procession? (1919) shares a lot with Emerson and Thoreau in relation to its attitudes towards the self and society. It is divided into two parts. The first portrays the conditions of man in society, and condemns its negative and corruptive influence on him. The second part depicts the man in a natural state of purity and happiness.

Most of people are machines set into motion by

Time?s fingers for a day and then they break

Say not this is a learned scholar

Or this is a revered master

For the best of people are herds

driven by? shepherds?

Gibran holds almost the same concepts of man and society. He considers people to be ?machines? just like Emerson did in his The American Scholar when he refers to man as a ?machine.? Thoreau, for his part, states in his Walden that the individual ?has no time to be anything but a machine.?? Like Gibran, the masses are depicted as ?herds? by the two authors in the two previous works.

?After the Second World War, Arab American literature entered a period of ?quiescence.? The main writers of this period were Vance Bourjaily, William Peter Blatty and Eugene Paul Nassar. They identify themselves as Americans rather than Arab Americans. They do not use ethnic literary markers in their writings. Hence, it is hard to distinguish them from the mainstream literature. Evelyn Shakir stresses the idea that ?American boom children?those who came of age in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s? costumed themselves as ?regular Americans? and hoped to pass off as such, which may be why they produced so little literature.

A close reading of Vance Bourjaily?s two novels The End of My life (1947) and Confessions of a Spent Youth (1960) demonstrates almost no feeling of ethnicity, which may show any sort of identification with Arab culture. One may conclude that the author distances himself from his Arab American identity. With this in mind, William Peter Blatty went even further and felt embarrassed by his ethnic identity, which is personified by his loud and domineering mother in his novel entitled The Exorcist (1971). Arab ethnicity becomes a social stigma, which he faced early in his childhood through camel jokes of neighborhood children. This sort of embarrassment towards one?s identity is very much stressed in his autobiography Which Way to Mecca, Jack? (1960). Eugene Paul Nassar, for his part, gives ?an unabashedly sentimental portrait of an ethnic community? in his memoir, Wind of the Land (1979) .

After the 1970 s, a new wave of Arab immigration to the United States took place. This wave took place due to new liberalized laws that put an end to the quota system. It is different from the first in the sense that most of the new immigrants were Muslims and were educated and skilled. They identified themselves as Arabs and were very much aware of nationalist ideologies, which were predominant in the Arab world. Third generation Arab Americans join them. In this period, there is a shift towards critiquing.

The notion of identity is questioned. In her What Does a True Arab Do Now? ?Shihab Nye sees that Arab American identity can only be discovered through a process of making sense of disparate experiences rather than a static identity which relies on the past and linked to the preservation of cultural heritage. In doing so, she both celebrates and criticizes her ethnic community. In Blood, she demonstrates some self-content with her father?s folktales on being a ?true Arab?. However, she seems to question the implications of holding this identity. The poem was written in 1982, the year of the massacre of Sebrah and Shetila. Diana Abu Jaber, for her part, mirrors this sort of self-critique in her Crescent (2003). Sirine, the protagonist, is looking for a sense of self, while distanced from her Arab identity.

Having discussed the stages which Arab American literature underwent, we are left with a question: what is the contribution of Moroccan literature, if there is any, in what is termed ?Arab American Literature??

Creepy robot baby now creepier with torso and floppy arms

22 hrs.

A robot baby being built as part of a neuroscience research program in Japan has just gotten a torso, including arms that flop around like an infant?s sans swaddle.

Affeto, the robo-baby, is creepy in its realism, which is what the team from Osaka University aims to accomplish as they use robotics to study ?how humans? higher cognitive functions develop,? according to a project description.

Ultimately, the robot will be used in behavioral experiments. For now, the researchers are trying to ?build a realistic child robot with a muscle-skeletal system.??

The torso?s flexibility comes from 22 pneumatic actuators in its body.

In the video below you can see that Affeto?s torso is approaching the realistic stage. At one point, it hits itself in the face with ?babyish looseness,? Endgadget notes.?

The robot?s face has the thousand-mile stare of a well satiated or exhausted infant, but that may be because the team has yet to pair the torso with the robotic head, which was demonstrated in Feb.?2011.

Stay tuned.

Some rue neglect at SKorea's 'enemy cemetery'

PAJU, South Korea (AP) ? Just south of the Demilitarized Zone, hundreds of identical wooden grave markers poke from a grassy hill surrounded by rice paddies and trees. Some markers are rotting; others have been knocked to the dirt; most have no names.

Here, within sight of the North's dark mountains, is South Korea's badly neglected "enemy cemetery," final resting place for Chinese and North Koreans, most of them killed in the Korean War that ended with an armistice agreement 59 years ago Friday.

The two Koreas remain bitter enemies. China, however, has become one of Seoul's most important economic partners and a significant source of tourists. But those interested in visiting the graves of their countrymen who fought in the 1950-53 conflict may have a hard time even finding it. There is no parking lot, no signs on the main road; those who do make it are often saddened by what they see.

"My fellow countrymen were left in the wild by themselves. So lonely," said Huang Zhun, son of a Chinese Korean War veteran who survived. Huang, a businessman in east China's Hangzhou city, visited the cemetery last year to honor the dead.

Last year, more than 2 million tourists visited South Korea from China, which established diplomatic ties with Seoul in 1992 and has been its biggest trading partner since 2004. South Korean records estimate nearly 150,000 Chinese troops died in the Korean War, while China says 116,000.

Inspired by visiting Chinese, local officials have reviewed plans to renovate the cemetery. But the bitter feelings most South Koreans have toward their northern neighbors remains a seemingly insurmountable obstacle.

"How can we sympathize with people who aimed their guns at us?" said Won Bok-gi, an 82-year-old Korean War veteran. "I absolutely oppose such a move. ... We should destroy such a place."

The South Korean government has collected the scattered remains of about 770 North Koreans and 270 Chinese and buried them here since 1996, calling it a humanitarian measure. Most of the dead are unidentified.

Qin Furong, a 63-year-old bank employee from Jinan, in eastern China, had long dreamed of finding the remains of her father, who was killed in the war when she was 2. She visited the enemy cemetery after learning about it 2010, but found most of the graves marked only by wooden signs that read "anonymous."

"No names," she said in a phone interview with The Associated Press in China. So she burned paper "spirit money," bowed before a mass grave and made offerings of fruit and alcohol.

"Let it be for all the Chinese soldiers who are buried there," said Qin, who later asked a friend to bring her soil from the cemetery, which she plans to take to her father's hometown as a memorial to him. She's grateful South Korea has a place for its former enemies, but she's disappointed there's no way to know if her father is among them.

Only a few people visit the cemetery each day. During a recent visit by Associated Press journalists, the burial mounds were littered with cigarette butts, possibly used in lieu of incense offerings by Chinese visitors.

Some South Koreans want to do more. Local resident Kim Dong-hun is pushing for private development of the cemetery, hoping it could increase tourism and also be a site of pilgrimage for the Chinese.

Mukgai, a South Korean who goes by his Buddhist name and plans to soon become a monk, conducted a 108-day prayer session at the cemetery this year, and plans to build a small temple there and hold a concert.

"Offering the highest-level respect to the dead is a heroic act," he said.

Gyeonggi province, which has jurisdiction over the cemetery, discussed a renovation plan with Defense Ministry officials earlier this year, but provincial officials later shelved the idea because of worries over a possible conservative backlash ahead of December's presidential election. Provincial officials who attended the meeting spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss it with the media.

The Defense Ministry declined to comment.

Tensions between the Koreas remain high since the sinking of a South Korean warship and a North Korean artillery strike on a border island in 2010. Pyongyang has threatened several times in recent months to attack Seoul, and its April rocket launch, said by North Korea to be a peaceful attempt to send a satellite into space, was widely seen as a test of its long-range missile capabilities.

Further complicating the cemetery's fate is that not all who are buried here died in the Korean War. Also among the forlorn graves are the bodies of nearly 30 North Korean commandos who unsuccessfully stormed South Korea's presidential palace in 1968, as well as a North Korean agent who killed himself after planting a bomb that killed 115 people aboard a South Korean jetliner in 1987.

Neither Pyongyang nor Beijing has shown interest in taking back the remains of their nationals or trying to identify them.

In a written response Thursday to an AP request for comment, the Chinese Civil Affairs ministry said it "will closely monitor the conditions of overseas facilities for Chinese martyrs and will collaborate with related departments on relevant efforts." It made no direct reference to the South Korean cemetery.

Pyongyang hasn't commented on the cemetery, and when Seoul asked it to retrieve its troops' remains in the 1980s, North Korea accepted only the ashes of dozens of Chinese soldiers.

Lee Chang-hyung, an analyst at Seoul's government-affiliated Korea Institute for Defense Analyses, said the South should fix up the Chinese graves and leave the North Korean ones until ties between the Koreas improve.

"We need to make a good use of the cemetery," he said, "for the development of our military and diplomatic relations with China."

'Dishonored' interactive trailer lets you choose your plan of attack

3 hrs.

"Daring Escapes" is a new interactive trailer that lets you choose how you would?escape a situation in the forthcoming steampunk-themed action role-playing?game "Dishonored."

The idea behind the trailer is to show you, the player, the different ways you will be able to tackle situations within the game.?The most compelling element of "Dishonored" when I played the game at the Electronic Entertainment Expo was just that: I was able to chose my own play-style and come up with my own way of solving problems on the fly.

The game achieves this by letting you use multiple powers in unison. I was very happy to see how a simple set of powers could result and an incredibly fun amount of complexity while still being intuitive. You as a gamer are smart and "Dishonored" allows you the?creativity?to demonstrate that.

The trailer above is a small demonstration of what the game -- which launches Oct. 9 -- will?hold.?

Let me know which method you chose in the "Dishonored" trailer by leaving a comment on my Facebook page.

And for an in-depth look at why "Dishonored" is a game to keep your eye on, check out the following video:

DOUBLE DUTY

The teamwork continues even after the German gymnasts leave the floor.

Several English-speaking reporters wanted to talk to Oksana Chusovitina, who is competing in her sixth Olympics at 37 ? unheard of for a female gymnast. There was just one problem: Chusovitina, who is originally from Uzbekistan, doesn't speak English, and there were no translators available.

A TV researcher who speaks Russian initially offered to help, only to realize he was needed for something else on the other side of the room. Elisabeth Seitz then leaned over and said, "If you need translating, I can try to help." She did better than that, translating about five minutes' worth of questions for Chusovitina.

Chusovitina competed for the Unified Team at the 1992 Olympics, then her native Uzbekistan in Atlanta, Sydney and Athens. She moved to Germany in 2002, so her son, Alisher, could be treated there for leukemia. She has lived there ever since, and switched nationalities in 2006 to express her appreciation for her adopted country.

CYCLIST'S-EYE VIEW

AP journalist and avid bicyclist Warren Levinson reports in from two wheels:

I am astonished at how much official support there is for bicycling in London, given how narrow the streets are. The "Boris Bikes" ? London's popular bike-sharing program, named for its mayor ? are just the beginning. There are bicyclists everywhere at all hours and of all levels, in numbers you can only imagine in New York.

That said, there is no way I would have attempted to ride here if I weren't used to city cycling.

One of my New York City rules: I don't tangle with buses. Here, they are impossible to avoid. You're moving along and gradually become aware of a double-deck whale, breathing quietly through its blowhole, just over your right shoulder. (Buses in London are much quieter than they are in New York.)

A newspaper, The Independent, ran a race to Olympic Park between a bicycle, a car, the Underground and a riverboat. The bike won by a big margin. So far, I am enjoying the ride.

FEDERER'S FLAW

Roger Federer has been holding court, and he delivered up a secret: He can't play tennis "at all" with his left hand.

Other tidbits from the winner of 17 tennis majors at an entertaining news conference:

?He is not a huge autograph hunter.

?He is looking forward to chatting with other Olympians ? "It doesn't matter if they are famous or not."

?And he is in two minds about being able to wear colored kit at Wimbledon, where the usual etiquette requiring that players wear white is relaxed for the Olympics.

"I feel a bit awkward playing in a red shirt out at Wimbledon," he said. "But I don't dislike it."

Federer, 31 next month, wouldn't rule out another Olympic appearance ? it would be his fifth ? at the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016. "There's definitely a chance," he said.

If South Arican athletes don't perform at these Olympics, they can't blame the food or the accommodation. Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula has visited London's athletes village and pronounced it good.

FIT AT 40

There are always a handful of athletes at the Olympics trying to win one for the aged, and Chris Horner is "that guy" for the U.S. men's road cycling team.

Horner, who will turn 41 in October, gives off a grandfatherly vibe surrounded by 20-something teammates Tejay van Garderen, Taylor Phinney, Tyler Farrar and Timmy Duggan.

Horner turned professional in 1995, but failed to make the U.S. team for the next four Summer Olympics. He figured that London was his final shot, and was nearly overcome with emotion when USA Cycling announced he had made the five-man team for Saturday's road race.

"Your whole life, you're always trying to get on the Olympic team," Horner said from the team's training base in the Surrey countryside.

U.S. women's wrestling coach Terry Steiner is hopeful that the growth of the sport domestically will lead to the country's first gold medal.

The Americans have a pair of two-time Olympians in Clarissa Chun at 48 kilograms and Ali Bernard at 72 kg. Both reached bronze medal matches before falling in Beijing and are considered legitimate medal contenders

"Our goals are very simple. We've got four athletes and we'd like to leave here with four medals. And I think we have the athletes that can perform and have performed at a high level," Steiner said.

Federer, with 17 Grand Slams, won a gold medal in doubles in 2008 with fellow countryman Stan Wawrinki. He'll be back at Wimbledon to try to win gold in singles, and his chances improved when Spain's Rafael Nadal pulled out due to injury.

TALL AND SMALL

A tower of men's tennis will face, or rather peer down at, the tour's smallest player in first-round action at the Olympics.

No. 11 seed John Isner of the United States is matched against Olivier Rochus of Belgium in a draw that was announced Thursday at Wimbledon. Isner is 6 feet 9 inches (2.06 meters) tall, and his opponent is 5 feet 6 inches (1.68 meters) tall.

Last year, Isner defeated Rochus to win the title at Newport in the United States. The Association of Tennis Professionals described it as the "biggest-ever height differential" in a tour final.

The ATP biography for Rochus, whose career-high ranking was No. 24 in 2005, says his ambition as a child was "to be tall."

At 6 feet 10 inches (2.08 meters), Ivo Karlovic of Croatia is the tallest man on the tour.

WELCOME TO NODNOL?

Call that a welcome? A sprawling shopping mall next to London's Olympic Park has been forced to alter signs greeting Arabic-speaking visitors, after a campaign group pointed out that the message was almost unreadable.

Westfield Stratford, which has more than 260 stores and is located right next to the main Olympic venues, has confirmed it is replacing banners put in place to welcome Olympic visitors after it was contacted by the Council for Arab-British understanding.

The council said signs that were supposed to say "Welcome to London" in Arabic were instead written backwards and did not have the letters joined up, leaving the message virtually indecipherable.

Chris Doyle, the council's director, says the banner has taken a simple message and "jumbled it up and separated the letters ? what you got was a load of gibberish."

MAJOR DONATION

Nearly 2,000 Moroccan kids are benefitting from a decision by British rower Mohamed Sbihi not to fast during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan in order to pursue his Olympic dream.

Sbihi, who is part of the men's eight at the London Games, felt he wouldn't be able to maintain his competitive edge if he abstained from food and drink from dawn to dusk during Ramadan, which began last Friday.

So, as a compromise, he is instead digging deep into his pocket and paying to feed 1,800 people via an English-based charity ? Walou 4 Us ? that works with kids in Morocco.

"It's written in the Quran that those unable to fast have to feed 60 people or fast for 30 days for every day they miss intentionally," Sbihi said.

"So, it worked out 1,800 people or 5 years' fasting. I'm very fortunate that I have funds to pay and make the donation. I made the donation about a month and a half ago."

Pretty Little Liars Season 3 Episode 7, Crazy Recap | Teen.com

We never thought that board games and dolls could be so creepy until last night?s episode of Pretty Little Liars happened. Oh, and the episode ?CrAzy? also brought a newcomer to Rosewood who?s a former friend of Ali?s, a car accident, and the return of Mr. DeLaurentis. Yup. It was eventful to say the least?

Read on to see what happened with each girl last night, and don?t forget to tell us who had the worst night ? plus your predictions for next week ? in the comments!

1.?What happened with Emily??Emily, Aria and Spencer run into an old friend of Ali?s at the coffee shape named CeCe Drake, who they?ve never heard a thing about. She works at the boutique across the street from her coffee shop, so when Nate asks Emily for her help in picking out a gift for his new date, Jenna (since he thinks they?re friends and all), they shop at the boutique. Emily lets Nate in on the secret about Garrett and Maya and his correlation to her death, and then finds out that Nate is dating both Jenna and CeCe, who calls up Jenna and threatens her to stay away from him. Way harsh.

2. What happened with Spencer? Now that Toby is sorta catching on, Spencer comes clean to him and tells her about the bracelet that she and Jason found at the vintage shop the week prior ? and how it confirms that Garrett isn?t Ali?s killer. Then later, Jason gets into a car accident because he was drinking (don?t drink and drive, kids!), but Spencer covers it all up by pretending she was driving (which results in her leaving her car on the side of the street and the whole situation looking way sketchy to the police.) Toby gets mad that Spencer lied to the cops since it?s technically a felony, but Spencer doesn?t care and makes him swear that he won?t out Jason to the police or anyone else. Uh oh.

3. What happened with Hanna? Wilkens comes to Hanna?s house and tells her she needs to give a blood sample. Since that wasn?t Garrett?s blood on the anklet and since the blood type on it matches Hanna?s (O negative), she could be a suspect. Yikes. Then later, Hanna finds a Ouija board on her kitchen table that pricks her when she touches it. She remembers it was the game that she and Mona played one night when Ali was first missing, and when asked where Ali was, the board said ?Alive.? That same night, Hanna had a vision of seeing Ali on her porch, and later on told the DeLaurentis family that she was alive. Ali?s dad got mad since she gave the family ?false hope? by saying that, and he hasn?t forgiven her yet. As for Mona and the Ouija board?

4. What happened with Aria??Hanna tells Aria the story, who then goes to visit Mona to try to get the rest of it out of her, begging Mona to tell her who is trying to hurt Hanna. But then, right at the moment, visiting hours end. Go figure. So Hanna and Aria join forces and sneak into the asylum (because that?s realistic) and find Mona playing with dolls, reciting the phrase ?no-one to save Alli from evil.? The acronym for that, Hanna later figured out, is ?noone safe.? But was she referring to the girls or to Mona?!

Oh, and we should probably also mention that in this episode, Aria?s mom went on her first online date, which happened to be with Ted, the guy who hit on Ashley Marin at the Church clothing drive. We totally called that one happening, BTW.
